
UC Irvine Falls To Cal State Northridge, 3-1

IRVINE, Calif. -- Cal State Northridge out-lasted UC Irvine, 3-1 (32-30, 17-25, 25-20, 25-17) in a Big West match at Crawford Court Friday.
The league-leading Matadors improve to 20-4 overall and 10-1 Big West, while UCI falls to 11-13 on the year and 2-8 in league action.
Aly Squires led the Anteaters with 15 kills, 18 digs and four block assists. Allison Lee put away 11 kills, nine digs and four total bocks, while Cassidy Pickrell and Arielle Manz each recorded nine kills. Manz led all players with seven total blocks. Libero Arden Davis had 14 digs and setter Shelley Anderson recorded 46 set assists and 12 digs.
Senior middle blocker Shannon Fleming recorded three block assists to move into second place on the UCI career list with 339. She also added eight kills.
Casey Hinger was the lone Matador in double-figure kills with 13. Mahina Haina, Ciena Stinson, and Sydney Gedryn each totaled eight kills, while Natalie Allen had seven kills. Libero Kelcie Randazzo recorded 28 digs.
Cal State Northridge out-hit (.208-.181) and out-dug (73-69) the Anteaters. UCI held a 7-6 advantage in aces and the teams were deadlocked in blocks, 11-11.
Cal State Northridge scored the first two points of the first set before UCI's Arielle Manz took over the middle recording two kills and two blocks to lift the Anteaters to a 7-4 lead. The Matadors battled back with a 7-4 run to knot the score at 11-11. The teams would never get more than two points ahead of each other until the Matadors scored four straight to pull away 20-16. The Anteaters would rally on a 5-1 spurt which was capped by a Shelley Anderson ace to tie the set at 22-22. A kill by Sydney Gedryn and an Anteater dig error gave Northridge its first set point, 24-22. A pair of kills by Aly Squires and a block by Allison Lee and Manz put the Anteaters ahead 25-24. The teams would trade points until two kills by Gedryn gave the Matadors a 31-30 advantage. A kill by Casey Hinger ended the set 32-30 for Northridge. Gedryn hit .875 (7-0-8) from the setter position.
In the second set, UCI opened a 15-12 lead on two Cassidy Pickrell kills and a kill by Squires. The Anteaters would not relinquish the lead as an ace by Lee, kills by Fleming and Squires plus a Matador attack error extended the margin to 24-16. Following a kill by Northridge, a Matador service error gave UCI the set 25-17.
The Anteaters opened a 14-11 lead on a block by Manz and Squires, but Northridge would battle back and take an 18-17 lead on an ace by Natalie Allen. After a UCI kill by Lee, the Matadors would score twice on kills by Gedryn and Mahina Haina to go ahead 20-18. Northridge would go on to win the set, 25-20. The Anteaters struggeled offensively hitting just .049 (11-9-41).
UCI led 7-6 in the fourth set, before Northridge scored six straight, the last an ace by Allen, to go up 12-7. Two kills by Haina opened a 16-10 advantage for the Matadors as they went on to win 25-17 and the match 3-1. CSN hit .355 (14-3-31) in the final stanza.
UCI will host UC Davis tomorrow (Nov. 9) at 7:00 p.m. in the Bren Center.
