HONOLULU, HI ---UC Irvine out-blocked Hawaii but lost the ace race, 9-3 as the Rainbow Wahine swept the Anteaters, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23 Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Arena.
Neither team hit particularly well as UCI hit .178 while UH was held to a .168 hitting percentage. Arielle Manz had a standout effort, putting away eight of 16 attempts with no errors to hit .500 to go along with a match-leading four block assists. Shannon Fleming totaled seven kills and three block assists while Allison Lee, Aly Squires and Cassidy Pickrell chipped in six kills apiece. Shelley Anderson had 28 assists while Arden Davis paced UCI with nine digs.
UCI took its first lead at 14-13 in the first as Pickrell won the joust at the net and the outside hitter followed it up with another kill to give the team a 15-13 lead at the media timeout. At 16-16, a Pickrell kill kicked off a five-point run for the Anteaters, who built their biggest lead of the match at 21-16. However, a service error by the Anteaters sparked a 9-2 run by the 'Bows, who won the set on a cross-court kill from Jane Vorster.
A service error hurt the Anteaters again in the second set as miscue set off a 7-1 run, allowing the Rainbow Wahine to pull away from an 8-8 tie and take a 15-9. A 4-1 rally by Hawaii opened the lead to seven points at 19-12 and UH took the second set on a service error by the Anteaters.
UCI came out strong in the third, building a 6-2 lead on the kill from Fleming, who knocked down the overpass from UH. The Anteaters extended their lead to 12-7 but the 'Bows chipped at the deficit and caught UCI at 16-16 on a kill Mita Uiato. UCI responded to grab 20-18 edge as Manz and Lee blocked Kristiana Tuaniga. However, the Anteaters were unable to hold off Hawaii as the 'Bows came back to tie the match at 21-21 on an ace from Ali Longo. UH took the lead on a kill from Emily Hartong and the two teams traded points until a kill from Hartong gave UH match point. The 'Bows turned to Tayler Higgins off the bench, who fired an ace to complete the sweep.
