
UC Irvine Swept By Loyola Marymount

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine suffered its second loss of the day after falling to Loyola Marymount, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-20) in the nightcap at Gersten Pavilion.
The Anteaters (1-4) were unable to get going offensively, hitting .078 for the match while the Lions (4-1) put together a .276 hitting percentage.
Aly Squires and Victoria Dennis paced the team with six kills apiece with Squires lead the team with 12 digs. Dennis was the most efficient, hitting .267 (6k- 2e- 15ta). Setter Marisa Alvarez handed out 24 assists and fired two aces in the effort.
UCI (1-4) led in the first set 11-7 but the Lions chipped at the lead and at 20-18, LMU out-scored UCI 6-1 to take a 24-21 advantage. Marisa Bubica's kill closed the deficit to two points but Hannah Tedrow connected with Litara Keil to put away the set for LMU.
LMU built a 14-7 lead in the second frame and never looked back. The Anteaters came as close as three points at 16-13 on an unforced error by the Lions but LMU capped the set with a service ace from Kathleen Luft to take a two-set lead.
In the final set, neither team was able to pull away from the other. Squires and Ella Rosenfeld blocked Luft at the net and Kristin Winkler notched a service winner to give UCI a 17-15 edge. The Lions caught UCI at 19-19 and then reeled off five consecutive points to lead 24-19. Following a Lion service error, DeWitt put away her ninth kill to complete the sweep.
UCI hosts Colgate Saturday (Sept. 1) at 10:00 a.m. and then faces top-ranked Nebraska tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m.
