Three UCI Women's Teams Recognized for Academic Excellence by NCAA
June 15, 2012 | Women's Indoor Track
IRVINE, Calif. --- Three UC Irvine women's teams have earned public recognition awards by the NCAA based on their Academic Progress Rates (APRs).
The UCI squads recognized are cross country, indoor track and outdoor track & field.
The Anteater teams' scores ranked among the top 10 percent in their respective sports for 2010-11, the most recent year in the report. A total of 954 Division I teams at 263 schools were recognized.
Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement, known as APR. The score measures eligibility and retention each semester or quarter, and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
"These teams prove that it is possible to not only balance academic and athletic commitment, as most student-athletes do; but to exceed standards and post outstanding academic scores," said NCAA President Mark Emmert in a news release. "The drive and determination shown in the classroom and on the field by these men and women represent what it means to be an NCAA student-athlete."
