'Eater Alum Jeff Powers Scores Twice in USA Win over Australia

ALMATY, Kazakhstan --- UC Irvine alum Jeff Powers scored a pair of goals in Team USA's 7-5 win over Australia in the quarterfinals of the FINA World League Super Final in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Friday.

Powers, a two-time Olympian, scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter to give the Americans a 5-1 halftime lead.

With the victory, the U .S. will meet Croatia in a semifinal Saturday with Spain facing Italy in the other semi.  The U.S.-Croatia game will be streamed live through FINA TV at 3:50 a.m. (PT) and can be viewed by clicking here.

Powers has been a member of the U.S. team in the previous two Olympics and is expected to compete in his third Olympics this summer in London.  He earned first-team All-America honors with the 'Eaters in 2000 and 2002.

Ryan Bailey and Tim Hutten, two other All-American players when playing at UCI, are also members of the U.S. National team.  Bailey is expected to play in his fourth Olympics this summer and Hutten his second.  Bailey and Tony Azevedo are expected to be the first male athletes in USA Water Polo history to compete in four Olympic Games.

Hutten was the 2008 recipient of the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award given annually to the top player in the NCAA.
