UC Irvine Gets Big Ranked Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- The UC Irvine Anteaters were peeved at being dropped from the rankings last week and took it out on the San Diego Toreros with a 4-3 win Friday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The doubles matches were fairly one-sided. USD (3-7) took the No. 2 doubles match, but Franziska Goettsching (Heitersheim, Germany / Faust Gymnasium) and Kristina Smith (Laguna Niguel / Dana Hills HS) dominated in the No. 1 slot to even the match. The Facey sisters had it going today as well as they were able to bring home the all-important doubles point.
Singles play began awkwardly as USD's No. 5 player, Maja Sujica went down with an apparent ankle injury and was forced to retire giving Stephanie Hammel (Placentia / Valencia HS) a big win. Courtney Byron (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep HS) continued her hot play with a play win to give UCI (11-5, 3-1) the 3-0 lead.
The Toreros would fight back to close the gap to 3-2, but Kat Facey (Cameron Park / Ponderosa HS) would shut the door on USD giving the 'Eaters the eventual 4-3 win.
UCI now gets a little time off for finals, not playing until Sun. Apr. 1 when it hosts Cal State Northridge at 12:00 p.m. at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
