Kristin Winkler Voted AVCA All-American Honorable Mention
December 12, 2012 | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. --- Kristin Winkler added another award to her stellar resume after being named American Coaches Volleyball Association honorable mention today.
Winkler, the lone Anteater to earn AVCA recognition this year, becomes the first All-American honoree since Kari Pestolesi and Julianne Piggott were awarded the same honor in 2009.
Winkler anchored the Anteater defense this year, breaking several records en route to earning a spot on the All-Big West first-team and becoming the first UCI libero to be honored on an all-conference first-team. Also an AVCA All-Region choice, Winkler became the Big West's career leader with 2,260 digs, eclipsing the previous mark of 2,194. She is just the second Anteater to reach 600 digs in a single-season, finishing 2012 with 627 to capture the record and can be found in the top 10 of the season annals all four years. She also re-wrote the single-match record twice, surpassing her previous mark of 34 digs with 35 against Arizona State and then again with 36 versus Pacific.
Winkler also moved into the career top 10 in service aces with 102 after posting a team-high 26 this year.
