Winkler, Squires, Alvarez Dot UCI Annals; Tough Season Ends For Anteaters
November 27, 2012 | Women's Volleyball
2012 SEASON
- UCI played a strong schedule with three-ranked teams on the slate, including No. 1 Nebraska.
- The Anteaters beat third-place Cal State Northridge twice and pushed Hawaii to five games for the first time since 1992.
- The team will look to improve next year against the expanding Big West Conference after falling twice to future member, Boise State, and once to San Diego State.
- The Anteaters return 10 players to the squad next year, including redshirt freshmen, Marisa Bubica, Ella Rosenfeld as well as true freshman, Sydney Wright, all of whom made considerable contributions to the team this year.
KRISTIN WINKLER
- Kristin Winkler's march toward the Big West career mark highlighted an up-and-down season for the Anteaters.
- Winkler surpassed the conference dig record of 2,194 against Long Beach State and now owns the top spot with 2,260 digs.
- It was one of four records broken by Winkler this year. The first was UCI's single-match mark, set against Arizona State. Winkler picked up 35 digs against the Sun Devils, surpassing her own mark of 34 which she recorded in 2011. Winkler would erase that mark once more against Pacific with 36 digs and she now holds the top five spots in the single-match dig record books.
- Winkler then erased UCI's career-dig mark in the ninth match of the year. Winkler becomes the only Anteater to have reached the 2,000 career dig mark, passing alumna Devon Sutherland's four year total of 1,756 (2005-08).
- The libero also became the second player to reach 600 digs in the UCI season annals. Winkler passed former Anteater, Brenda Waterman, who posted 600 digs in 2003, and ends her senior campaign with 676 digs. Winkler is the only Anteater to dot the top 10 single-season records each of her four years.
ALY SQUIRES
- Outside hitter Aly Squires made her mark in the career records, climbing to seventh with 3,176 attempts.
- The junior finished second in the UCI season records with 1,477 attempts.
- Squires also broke into the season top 10 with 443 kills to rank eighth.
- Squires posted a season-high 23 kills against Cal State Fullerton and had 15 double-double matches.
MARISSA ALVAREZ
- Marissa Alvarez ended her collegiate career with 1,986 assists to place sixth in UCI's career ledger.
- Alvarez sported a 10.09 assist average to sit fourth among the Big West leaders.
- She was third on the team in digs with 292 and aces with 20.
- Alvarez had a career-high 62 assists against the Titans, surpassing her previous best of 53 assists against Liberty in 2010.
SHANNON FLEMING
- Shannon Fleming also made a move into the top 10 with 246 block assists in three seasons.
- Fleming averaged 1.02 block assists per set this year for the Anteaters and finished third in kills with 210.
- Fleming also sported the team's top hitting percentage at .241 and fired 24 aces to finish second on the team.
MARISA BUBICA
- Marisa Bubica finished second on the team behind Squires with 341 kills and a 3.13 average.
- Bubica posted 138 digs and 12 aces to go along with 58 blocks.
ELLA ROSENFELD
- Ella Rosenfeld was the team's top blocker with 109 and a 1.11 average.
- Rosenfeld ranked sixth in the Big West in blocking and put away 123 kills for the Anteaters.
- The redshirt freshman also finished the season sixth in the UCI single-season records in block assists.
SYDNEY WRIGHT
- Despite contending with a pair of injuries, freshman Sydney Wright was fourth on the team with 171 kills and averaged 2.06 kills per set.
