IRVINE, Calif. --- Mamadou Ndiaye, a 7-5 center from Brethren Christian High School in Huntington Beach, has signed a national letter of intent with UC Irvine, announced by Anteater head coach Russell Turner.
Ndiaye, a native of Senegal, averaged 24 points, 13.9 rebounds and 5 blocked shots per game as a junior last season at Brethren Christian. He is ranked 79th in the ESPN Top 100.
"I'm excited to add a player of Mamadou's quality and character to our program," Turner said. "He is an unbelievable story and as I have gotten to know him, I am more and more impressed with him.
"He is a tremendous fit for our campus and community with his character and commitment to academics.
"To recruit someone of his caliber is an important step in improving our program and I look forward to working with him and watching him grow and improve as a player.
"The UC Irvine community has benefitted tremendously from the Huntington Beach community and the people at Brethren Christian High School that have welcomed him to this country, and I hope to continue to represent the values that they have surrounded him with," Turner added.
Ndiaye had a top-scoring game of 43 points against Village Christian in last season's playoffs and added 14 rebounds and five blocks in that contest.
An All-CIF selection, he had 40 points and 24 boards in a win over Crossroads. Ndiaye, who had eight games of at least 30 points, shot 65 percent from the field last season. He had 26 games of double-figure rebounds as the Warriors had a 24-6 overall record (10-0 in league) and reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 5AA playoffs.
In a statement, Ndiaye said "I chose UC Irvine because I felt very comfortable at the university and with the coaching staff. It is an excellent school that will help me develop as a student and basketball player."
