October 26, 2012 | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine handled Cal State Northridge, sweeping the Matadors 25-17, 25-23, 25-17 Friday at Crawford Court. The straight set triumph was UCI's second win over CSUN this season as the Anteaters pulled to .500 in Big West action at 5-5 (10-14 overall).
Aly Squires paced the offense with a match-leading 11 kills while Marisa Bubica put away nine kills. Shannon Fleming posted an errorless night, connecting on eight of 19 attempts to hit .421. The story of the night was the game at the net as the Anteaters logged a 9.5-4 advantage. Ella Rosenfeld led the team with five block assists and Squires chipped in three. Marissa Alvarez recorded a pair of key solo blocks to go along with 36 assists and seven digs while Kristin Winkler picked up 13 digs and tied a career-high with four aces.
UCI built a 10-6 lead in the first set but CSUN trimmed the deficit to two at 10-8 on back-to-back kills from Britney Graff and Sam Kaul. At 11-9, the Anteaters took control of the match, scoring five consecutive points to take a 16-9 lead. The Matadors never threatened and the triple block of Squires, Rosenfeld and Sydney Wright on Kaul would cap the set.
Cal State Northridge jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set No. 2, capitalizing on a pair of unforced errors by the Anteaters. Following a timeout, UCI responded by out-scoring the Matadors 5-1 to tie the set at 9-9. CSUN reclaimed a lead at 12-9 but at 17-14, UCI's tough serving led to a seven-point run as the Anteaters took a 21-17 advantage, capped by a back-row drop shot by Squires. The Matadors rallied, closing the gap to two but Cieana Stinton's attack went long to give UCI set point and Alvarez found Fleming with a kill down the middle as the Anteaters took a two-set lead.
CSUN was efficient in the third set, hitting .310 but the Anteaters blasted a .667 clip with no errors in 27 attempts. With UCI leading 13-12, the Anteaters used a 3-1 run to open a 16-13 margin. A kill by Squires followed by an attack error by Kaul opened the lead to five at 20-15 and the Anteaters cruised to a 25-17 win to complete the sweep.
