Anteaters Back On Track With Sweep Of UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- UC Irvine snapped a three-match losing streak with a 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 win over UC Riverside Saturday at the Student Recreation Center.
Aly Squires led the way with 14 kills while Marissa Alvarez posted a double-double with 36 assists and 13 digs. Shannon Fleming and Marisa Bubica each added nine kills apiece while Ella Rosenfeld 11-5 block advantage with six block assists. Kristin Winkler led all players with 22 digs.
An attack error by Annishia McKoy gave UCI a 10-7 lead in the first set but McKoy rebounded with two straight kills as the Highlanders rallied to catch the Anteaters at 10-10. Rosenfeld and Sydney Wright's block of Ashley Cox sparked a 5-1 run by the Anteaters for a 15-11 lead. UC Riverside chipped at the lead and Megan Reza's ace closed the gap to two at 18-16 but Rosenfeld and Wright paired up again to cap a two-point switch, giving the Anteaters the 20-16 advantage. Alvarez found Squires for the kill to give UCI set point and Alvarez then delivered the solo stuff on Amanda Vialpando for the game-winner.
An 8-1 run staked UCI to a 10-3 lead in the second set and the Anteaters never looked back, cruising to a comfortable 16-7 lead after reeling off another five straight points. An unforced error by the Highlanders put UCI at set point and Bubica knocked the ball down to close out the frame.
The Highlanders kept pace with the Anteaters in the third frame but UCI used a 4-1 run to out-score UC Riverside and pulled away from a close 9-8 contest to claim a 13-9 lead on a kill from Squires. Sandy Fung's ace closed the gap to two at 14-12 for UCR but Bubica delivered on back-to-back plays and Squires followed with a kill to open up the margin to five at 17-12. UCR punched back with a 5-1 run, shrinking the deficit to one at 18-17 and would tie the score on a kill from Cox at 20-20. Squires' kill gave UCI a 21-20 lead and the Anteaters went on to put away the final five points with Hannah Nabbout acing Megan Patterson to record the match-winning point.
