SHENZHEN, China --- UC Irvine alums Greg Enloe and Griffin Lerman scored goals, but the U.S. was edged by Russia, 11-10, in a semifinal game at the World University Games Sunday.
Lerman started and played nearly 16 minutes, also recording an assist. Enloe played over 13 ½ minutes and also had a blocked shot.
Russia outscored the USA, 6-3, in the second quarter and led 10-7 entering the fourth period before the Americans scored three straight goals to tie the game at 10-10. Russia hit a late power-play goal to clinch the victory.
The U.S., led by UCI head coach Marc Hunt, plays Macedonia in the bronze-medal game Tuesday.
Lerman completed his eligibility at UCI last fall when he scored 46 goals and was named second-team All-American.
Enloe, who was a member of the UCI program from 2005-09, scored 32 goals for the `Eaters as a senior in 2009.
Hunt, who is in his seventh season as UCI's head coach, is a two-time Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Coach of the Year (2007, 2009). He has led UCI to a top-five national ranking in four of his six seasons, including last fall when the `Eaters were fifth in the final national poll after finishing with an 18-8 overall record. UCI had five All-Americans on its team last season.
Hunt won gold as captain of the U.S. team at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y.
