ANTEATERS HEAD BACK ON THE ROAD: UC Irvine will begin a four-game road swing at Northern Colorado Monday (Dec. 19).The team will then head to Wyoming on Wednesday (Dec. 21) Both games begin at 7:00 p.m. MT
VS NORTHERN COLORADO: UC Irvine holds a 1-0 lead over the Bears in the series records. The Anteaters beat UNC 66-52 on Nov. 26, 2010 at the Bren Center.
Northern Colorado is 6-5 overall ands is coming off of a 61-54 victory over New Mexico on the road Thursday.
VS WYOMING: UC Irvine leads the series with the Cowgirls, 1-0 as the Anteaters beat Wyoming, 65-53 on Nov. 29, 2010 in Irvine.
Wyoming enters the week with a 3-7 record. The Cowgirls lost 65-59 at Idaho on Sunday.
COMMON OPPONENTS: UCI and Northern Colorado have both played Santa Clara with the Bears dropping that game 71-37 and the Anteaters winning, 88-82.
Wyoming and UCI have each beaten Weber State and lost to Utah State this year.
BIG WEST SLATE LOOMING: Following two non-conference games this week, UC Irvine will begin Big West Conference action on the road. The Anteaters travel to Cal State Northridge on Dec. 29 and Long Beach State on Dec. 31.
UCI returns to the Bren on Jan. 5 hosting Pacific at 7:00 p.m. UCI finished with a 7-9 conference record a year ago.
WHITE AMONG NATION'S BEST: Forward Jazmyne White is ranked 16th in the nation in field goal percentage. The junior, who leads the Big West Conference, owns a .581 mark (50-84) from the field. At 5-9, she is the smallest player ranked in the top 40 in that category. White leads the team with a 12.4 scoring average, which is eighth best among Big West players. The junior has posted double-figure points in seven of the last eight games. She is also averaging 5.8 rebounds per outing which ranks 10th in the league.
CHEYENNE HEATS UP HEADING TO WYOMING: Junior forward Cheyene Cathey had a career-high 11 points in the loss to San Diego State last week. She hit her first two three-pointers of the season against the Aztecs. Cathey is averaging 2.4 points and 1.0 rebounds.
UCI RANKS 37TH NATIONALLY IN FIELD GOAL PERCENTAGE: The Anteaters top the Big West Conference and are ranked 37th nationally in field goal percentage at .438.
The Anteaters shot a season-high .513 (40-78) against Bakersfield. The team has only dipped below .400 from the field twice this season.
MORE NATIONAL STATS: UCI ranks 60th in assists (15.00) and 62nd in scoring average (71.0) The Anteaters rank 328 out of 336 teams in field goal percentage defense (.458).
WINING STREAK SNAPPED AGAINST SAN DIEGO STATE: UCI shot a season-low 29.5 percent and snapped a three-game winning streak to San Diego State, 76-57 at the Bren Center last Friday.
The Anteaters, who was ranked 16th nationally in field goal percentage (.454) coming into the game, went 18-61 from the floor for the game, including hitting just 7-29 (24.1%) in the second half. The Aztecs shot 47.5 (29-61) percent from the floor overall and 53.3 (16-30) percent in the final 20 minutes. SDSU scored 20 points off of 19 UCI turnovers, swatted six blocks and controlled the glass with a 47-36 rebound advantage. UCI's 18 made field goals and five steals was the fewest of the year, while the team's 57 points was the second lowest total.
Kassandra McCalister led the Anteaters for the third consecutive game with 13 points, going 8-12 from the line. Cheyenne Cathey recorded a career-best 11 points on 3-5 shooting from the floor. Jazmyne White, Pernilla Hanson and Anete Klintsone each had eight points. Methlyn Onogomuho led UCI with seven rebounds.
BIG WEST STATS:UCI leads the Big West in field goal percentage (.438), assists (15.00) and rebounding defense (35.0). The Anteaters rank second in scoring average (71.0), steals (10.70) and rebounding margin (+5.1) and are third in blocked shots (4.20).
The Anteaters are last in the Big West in free throw percentage (.654), field goal defense (.458) and three-point field goal defense (.391).
MARSHALL BLOCKING MACHINE:Sophomore Jacquelyn Marshall saw 10 minutes of action last Friday and swatted three blocks. She is averaging 1.1 blocks per game and ranks sixth among Big West players.
OFFENSIVE MINDED:The Anteaters are averaging 71.0 points per game after averaging 67.0 points last season. Last year was the highest offensive output since the 1994-95 Anteaters scored 67.3 points per outing.
Five different players have led the team in scoring this year with four of the players recording 20 or more points. UCI is 3-0 when four players score in double-figures.
FROM DOWNTOWN: On the year, UCI averages 3.9 three-pointers per game, while opponents hit 6.6. Sophomore Jaquelyn Marshall leads the squad with 10 threes.
ON THE BOARDS: UCI is averaging 38.5 rebounds per gsame and holds a +3.5 rebounding average against its opponents. UCI has held the rebounding advantage on six occasions this year, but have been beaten on the glass 97-76 over the last two games.
MCCALISTER LEADS FROM THE LINE: Senior Kassandra McCalister has led the Anteaters in scoring the last three games, doing much of the damage from the free throw line. She was 10-15 from the free throw line versus Sacramento State which was the most attempts from the line among Big West players this year and is the second most made this season. Her 12 attempts versus SDSU ranks second.
