November 11, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine lost to Cal State Northridge 22-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-12 to close out the Big West home schedule Friday at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters (10-16, 4-10 Big West) were led by Aly Squires, who tied for the match-high with 14 kills. Kristin Winkler led all players with 23 digs and tied a career-high with four aces. Mary Carls posted a double-double with 23 assists and 15 digs while Arielle Manz led the team with four blocks to go along with seven kills.
Winkler aced Cal State Northridge on three straight plays as UCI took an 8-5 lead but the Matadors claimed a 13-8 advantage as Sydney Gedryn served for eight points, including four service winners. The Anteaters trimmed the gap to one at 17-16 on a kill from Manz and then scored four consecutive points to lead 20-18 on the kill by Shaina Olsen. A fourth ace from Winkler put UCI ahead 22-19 but CSUN knotted the score at 22-22. Carls connected with Shannon Fleming to halt the Matador run and an attack error by Sam Kaul gave UCI set point at 24-22. Fleming and Alexandra Hauser delivered the block on Natalie Allen to give the Anteaters a win in the first frame.
The Matadors scored four straight to open the second set and extended the lead to six at 11-5 on a kill from Allen, who had a team-high 14 kills. CSUN led by as many as 10 points (18-8) and UCI managed to close the gap to six (24-18) on an unforced error by Britney Graff but a UCI service error would tie the match at a set apiece.
The two teams kept the third set close early on but with UCI leading 11-9 on the solo stuff by Manz, the Matadors reeled off five consecutive points to swing the lead back to CSUN at 14-11. A kill from Pauline Acres brought the Anteaters to within two points at 15-13 but back-to-back UCI errors extended CSUN's lead back to four at 17-14. A UCI service error would the Matadors set point at 24-19 and Gedryn found Mahina Haina for the kill.
CSUN used the momentum in the previous set to take a 12-5 lead in the final frame. The Anteaters were unable to stop the Matadors, who used a five-point run to take a 17-6 advantage. UCI never threatened and Casey Hinger put the ball away on the final play to seal the win.
