Andrew Fontein Finalist for Lowe's Senior CLASS Award

IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior goalkeeper Andrew Fontein (Las Vegas, Nev. / Sierra Vista HS) was named as a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. Fontein is among 10 finalists that were chosen from 30 candidates.

The finalists were chosen by a media committee from the list of 30 men's candidates and 30 women's candidates announced in August. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to determine the winner. Fans are encouraged to vote on either the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award website or the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award Facebook fan page through November 14. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I head coaches' votes to determine the winner.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student-athletes in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards a senior season can bring. The award is sponsored by Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, and is managed by Premier Sports Management.

In the 2011 season, he is 9-2 in 11 matches with a 0.88 goals against average (GAA) allowing just 10 goals to go along with 27 saves. Fontein's nine wins give him 43 on his career, a UC Irvine men's soccer record, along with four shutouts to give him a UCI record 24 in his career. He also leads all Anteaters with a 0.83 GAA, 5,743 minutes, and a .770 win percentage all-time. The next match he plays will give him 63 in his UCI career and place him first all-time in goalkeeper matches. He already has 61 starts to lead all UCI keepers.

Fontein was especially instrumental in UCI's shutout win at No. 7 UC Santa Barbara last week. He and the No. 7 Anteaters play Wed. Oct. 5th at Cal State Fullerton before returning home to face Big West upstart Cal State Northridge at Anteater Stadium, Sat. Oct. 8th at 7:00 p.m.

Fontein is the third Anteater to be named a finalist for this award. Anteater baseball players Ben Orloff and Daniel Bibona also made the list. Orloff was a finalist in 2009, while Bibona won the award in 2010.
