October 27, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine took a break from its Big West Conference slate this week and handed Seattle a 25-18, 25-21, 26-24 loss Thursday at Crawford Court.
Aly Squires hit a season-best .400, knocking down 11 of 25 attempts with just one error to lead the Anteaters (9-12). Shaina Olsen chipped in 10 kills while Kristin Winkler led all players with 17 digs to become the third Anteater to reach 1400 career digs and now stands with 1,413. Alexandra Hauser fired three baseline winners to lead UCI to a 7-0 advantage in service aces. Marissa Alvarez topped the team with 18 assists while Arielle Manz posted a career-high five blocks.
UCI, which hit .300 in the first set, used a four-point run to take a 10-6 lead on an ace from Winkler. Seattle answered with three straight to close the gap to two at 14-12 and prompt a UCI timeout. After trading points, Shannon Fleming put the ball away on an overpass and she then paired up with Taylor Smith to deny Cristin Richards for the 17-13 lead. A three-point UCI run opened the lead to six (23-17) and Hauser locked up the first set with an ace.
The Anteaters took the 8-4 lead in the second frame but unforced errors allowed the Redhawks to climb to within one point at 9-8 on a kill from Richards. Leading 12-11, the Anteaters out-scored Seattle 4-1 to claim a 16-12 advantage. However, UCI was unable to hold off the Redhawks, who fashioned a four-point run to close the deficit to 22-20 on a key block by Allison Farley and Richards followed by a Seattle kill. A Seattle service error was followed by an Anteater block and Alvarez would go to Chanel Stewart for the game-winning kill.
Seattle took a brief 10-7 lead in the third set as the Anteaters bounced back with a 4-1 run to tie the score at 11-11. Neither team was able to establish a comfortable cushion but at 19-19, Seattle's Karina Miastkowska put away a kill and then paired up with Farley to deny Shaina Olsen at the net, highlighting a three-point rally. Olsen responded with a hard kill and a Hauser ace would knot the score at 22 points apiece. At 24-24, the Anteater block of Manz and Alvarez denied Kaytlyn Dill for the 25-24 edge and Dill's next attempt went long to end the match.
