October 22, 2011 | Women's Volleyball
IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine was unable to continue its momentum from its win last night, losing to Pacific 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) Saturday at Crawford Court.
Kristin Winkler led all players with 22 digs while Shaina Olsen and Aly Squires each put away nine kills. Squires just missed a double-double with 12 digs. Shannon Fleming was errorless on the night, putting away five of 13 attempts to hit .385. Alexandra Hauser led UCI (8-12, 3-6) at the net with five block assists while Mary Carls dished out 16 assists. Marissa Alvarez handed out 11 assists to go along with four digs.
Pacific used a .484 hitting percentage to take control in the first frame. Leading 10-8, the Tigers went to Samantha Misa on three straight plays to widen the margin to five at 13-8 and force a UCI timeout. Fleming connected with Olsen to interrupt the rally but Pacific fashioned a three-point run to take a 17-10 lead on a kill again from Misa. UCI never threatened and a service ace by Gabby Cowden would seal the set for the Tigers.
The Tigers took the early 10-7 lead in the second set but UCI would battle to close the gap to one at 12-11 on a kill by Olsen. However, Pacific responded by reeling off five straight points and took a 17-11 lead on the block by Misa and Sanders. Consecutive kills by Megan Birch and Misa followed by the put-away from Cowden gave Pacific an eight-point lead at 23-15 and Cowden would put away the game-winner.
The Anteaters carved out a 12-9 lead in the third set on kills from Pauline Acres and Squires, followed by an ace from Olsen. However, UCI was unable to hold off the Tigers, who answered with three straight points to tie the match. The tandem of Birch and Cowden delivered offensively for Pacific again to give the team a 17-15 lead but the Anteaters put together a strong 5-0 run to take a 20-17 advantage on Olsen's hard line shot. The Tigers rallied again and would catch the Anteaters at 22 points apiece on an unforced error by UCI. At 23-23, setter Hannah Clancy found Sanders for the kill and Clancy then turned to Birch, who completed the sweep.
