UC Irvine Swept By Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine fell to 7-11 and 2-5 in the Big West after suffering a 25-18, 25-11, 26-24 loss to Cal State Northridge Saturday at the Matadome.
UCI was led by Aly Squires, who logged nine kills while Shaina Olsen added seven. Kristin Winkler tied for the match-high with 13 digs while Mary Carls and Marissa Alvarez posted 15 and 14 assists, respectively.
Cal State Northridge used a 5-1 run in the first set to turn a 12-12 tie into a 17-13 lead on a kill by Syndey Gedryn that was followed by a ball-handling error by the Anteaters. UCI rallied to cut the lead to two at 20-18 on an ace from Pauline Acres but the Matadors then capitalized on three unforced UCI errors reeled off five straight to take the first frame.
Key blocks by CSUN sparked an early run as the host Matadors took a 9-4 advantage in the second set. The Anteaters were unable to stem the rally as the Matadors put together a 6-0 run to widen the margin to 10 points at 16-6. That would be as close as the Anteaters would come and Gedryn connected with Nicole Jarvis to give the team a two-set lead.
In the final set, it was CSUN again with the early lead at 11-9 on a kill by Casey Hinger. UCI quickly caught the Matadors at 11-11 on a kill from Alexandra Hauser but three straight attack errors by put CSUN back on top at 14-11. UCI continued to battle and out-scored CSUN 4-1 to tie the match as Acres denied Natalie Allen at the net with a solo block. The Matadors managed to stay a point ahead of the Anteaters until at 22-21, UCI used a three-point rally to take a 23-22 edge behind kills from Taylor Smith and Olsen. However, at 24-24, Gedryn went to Mahina Haina for the kill and UCI would commit a ball-handling error to end the match at 26-24.
