Vince O'Boyle, UC Irvine's Director of Track & Field/Cross Country, is in his 28th year at the university in 2009-10. He has been named Big West Conference Coach of the Year 20 times (12 in women's cross country, seven in men's cross country and once in women's track and field). O'Boyle was inducted into the 52nd annual Mt. SAC Relays Hall of Fame at a banquet in the City of Industry April 14, 2010. O'Boyle has developed one of the top distance programs not only on the West Coast, but in the nation. He has guided the UCI women's cross country program to four NCAA Championship meets. His 1990 Anteaters placed fourth in the nation, the highest finish in the program's history, and three UCI runners earned All-America distinction that season. He has coached UCI to 12 Big West Conference titles in women's cross country, including 2005, and seven league championships in the men's program. He has coached 18 individual Big West champions in men's and women's cross country and 10 of his athletes have earned All-America honors.. O'Boyle has served as director of the UCI track and field program for the last 24 years after two years as an assistant. He has coached 13 NCAA All-Americans in track and field while at UCI. His athletes have also proved successful in the classroom, as well over 300 of his student-athletes in cross country and track have been named Big West Conference Scholar-Athletes in the last 15 years. His women's cross country program has received UCI's Faculty Athletic Representative Award for the school's highest team grade-point average 11 times, including in 2008-09. His success is also recognized on the national and international levels, as he was selected head coach for the United States Senior Women's Cross Country Team for the 1992 World Championships in Boston. O'Boyle has served as a U.S. Olympic Festival coach on two occasions, as he was head coach for the West women's track team in 1989 and was the West's distance coach in the 1986 Festival. He also has been a member of the prestigious NCAA Track & Field Committee that governs intercollegiate cross country and track. A popular speaker, O'Boyle has participated in clinics at numerous sites, including Finland, Colorado Springs, Minneapolis, Phoenix and Seattle. O'Boyle coached at Citrus College for 11 years prior to joining the Anteater program. He was named Coach of the Year in California community college cross-country in 1980 and led Citrus to the state cross country title in 1981. He also had three conference championship teams in track at Citrus. O'Boyle received his B.A. degree in physical education from Cal Poly Pomona in 1970 and his M.A. degree in education from Azusa Pacific in 1973. He competed in cross country and track at Cal Poly Pomona, placing second in the Division II national cross country meet in 1968 and eighth in Division I in 1969. He also competed in both sports at Monrovia High School.
