Biography

OLYMPIC EXPERIENCE
• Competed in the 1500m at the 1984 and 1988 Summer Olympics
• Had a high finish of fifth at the 1988 Games in Seoul
• Won the 1500m at the 1980 Olympic Trials, but did not get a chance to compete in the Moscow Games due to the U.S. boycott
 
AT UC IRVINE
• Six-time All-American in track and cross country at UC Irvine
• Combined for six individual titles in indoor and outdoor track & field
• 1978 NCAA Division I national champion in the 1500m
• Also won three-straight 1500m titles at the NCAA Division II Championships from 1975-77
• Holds the school record at 3:36.1, while ranking third in program history in the 800m (1:47.6)
• Inducted into the UC Irvine Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983
 
EXTRAS
• Won silver at the 1983 World Championships and bronze at the 1987 Pan American Games
• Ran a world-record 136 sub-4 minute miles
• Set an American mile record of 3:47.69 (1982), which lasted for 25 years
• Inducted into the USATF Hall of Fame in 2002
• Started the cross country and track & field program at Cal State San Marcos
• Served as the Cougars’ head coach from 1999-2018
