45th Jones Cup Starts August 14 for Men's Basketball

IRVINE, Calif. -ย The UC Irvine men's basketball team is set to compete in the 45th William Jones Cup, an official FIBA event, in New Taipei City from August 14-23.

The Jones Cup format features eight teams from seven countries playing in two double round-robin groups for six group stage games. Group standings will determine the playoff and cross-over matchups with teams placing in fourth place in each group facing off in a playoff match and teams placing in third place in each group facing off in a playoff match. First and second place teams will play with winners advancing to the championship match.
"This is the beginning for us of an incredible opportunity with this group to visit the nation of Taiwan, the city of Taipei, and to play in the prestigious Jones Cup," remarked head coach Russell Turner making the third trip of his own to compete in this tournament.ย "This is such an incredible opportunity for our whole program to have the opportunity to compete there and to learn from their culture and to expose ourselves to them and them to us hopefully to build connections that sport creates. I'm really proud to be able to take these guys to Taiwan, and I'm equally proud to represent the University of California, Irvine and the city of Irvine."
This is UCI men's basketball's third foreign tour under Turner as the Anteaters ventured to South Korea in August 2018, and its the second trip to the Jones Cup having won the tournament in 2023 with a perfect 8-0 record. Three Anteaters on the current roster are making their second trip to the Jones Cup with Eli Chol, Ben Egbo, and Langston Redfield each part of the 2023 journey.
