Fourth Inning Keys 13-5 Victory Over San Diego

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball ended their homestand with a 13-5 Tuesday night win over San Diego in Anteater Ballpark
  • The game began with a two-run lead for the Toreros getting a double off the glove of Auggie Gutierrez to extend the inning, and an infield single and bloop single to drive in runs for the 2-0 USD lead
  • UCI got a run back in the second on a walk, but left the bases loaded trailing 2-1
  • The fourth inning really turned the game around in UC Irvine's favor
    • The first pitch hit Dylan Hillman, and he continued to move up on an Efren Ortega single and Daniel Polasek bunt single
    • With the bases loaded, Zach Doyle walked to tie the game, 2-2, and groundball outs by Frankie Carney and Alonso Reyes gave UCI the lead and an insurance run, 4-2
    • With two outs, the bats turned it up as the next six would reach
      • Zach Fjelstad singled just by the pitcher for another run, 5-2
      • After a pitching change, Gutierrez chopped an infield single off the pitcher's glove
      • Rowan Felsch hammered a double through the infield to score each of them, 7-2
      • Two walks would load the bases leading to another pitching change
      • The second pitch Polasek saw he slapped between the third baseman and the bag to clear the bases and complete the nine-run fourth inning
  • The 'Eaters continued to stay in control even after a three-spot for San Diego in the sixth inning
    • Tim Grack loaded the bases, and reliever Dane Grant could not help him out giving up a double to the right field wall, but the defense cut the rally short as Frankie Carney hit Alonso Reyes on the relay who threw out the batter looking to reach third
  • A final two-run eighth inning thanks to another Rowan Felsch double and an Efren Ortega single put the game officially out of reach
UC Irvine 13, San Diego 5
  • In a bullpen-style game, each team used seven pitchers with five of the Anteater pitchers tossing scoreless ball
    • Brandon Luu made his triumphant return after Tommy John surgery a year ago. He set down all three hitters he faced in the second inning on 10 pitches
    • Tyler Foster was the most effective arm of everyone Tuesday night with two scoreless frames.
      • He struck out three including two straight after giving up a one-out triple
      • Foster was the man on the mound during the nine-run 'Eater rally to help him earn his first career victory
    • Other scoreless outings came from Dane Grant in 1.1 innings, Peyton Rodgers in 0.2 innings, and Hunter Manning who stranded two inherited runners and struck out three including the final two hitters to close out the game
  • The offense put up its largest output of the season both in a game and in a single inning
    • Auggie Gutierrez upped his season average to team-best .324 with a three hit night reaching four times, scoring twice, and stealing a base
    • Daniel Polasek knocked in his first four career RBIs from two hits, a walk, and a run scored
    • Rowan Felsch had a pair of doubles and a walk while driving in three and scoring three
    • Players that recorded a hit, run, and RBI on the night also included Alonso Reyes, Zach Fjelstad, and Efren Ortega with Fjelstad adding a steal
    • Dylan Hillman reached all four times on the evening scoring twice
