'Eaters Cannot Make Up Big First Inning in 9-5 Loss

FULLERTON, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball spotted Cal State Fullerton seven runs in the first inning and could never make it up falling 9-5 Saturday at Goodwin Field to drop the weekend series.
  • Saturday's contest started with a pair of Anteater hits in the first inning that were erased on a double play ball
  • Cal State Fullerton's first two hitters reached on hits and later scored on a Paul Contreras double for a 2-0 Titan lead
    • Fullerton added on with an RBI single and later a hit by pitch forcing in a run to go up 4-0
    • With two outs, the Titans laid down a bunt that Ricky Ojeda threw away allowing all three runners to score putting the 'Eaters behind, 7-0
  • Tyler Foster came in to slow the Titan bats allowing them just two runs over four innings of relief
  • Meanwhile, the 'Eaters were struggling to catch up until the fifth inning
    • Four straight hits to began the inning helped put UCI on the board driven by RBI singles from Efren Ortega and Zach Doyle
    • Two more Anteaters came around on ground ball outs for a four-run frame and an 8-4 deficit
  • Fullerton responded with a home run to start their fifth inning to swing the momentum back, and they rode that down the stretch to claim the victory
Cal State Fullerton 9, UC Irvine 5
  • UCI is now 9-10 on the season and off to a 1-4 start in Big West action

    • Danny Suarez continued his run of solid pitching with three scoreless innings down the stretch allowing just one hit
