Anteaters Fall in Overtime Thriller to Aggies, 16-15

IRVINE, Calif. - No. 9 UC Irvine women's water polo team fell to No. 16 UC Davis, 16-15, on Sunday afternoon at Anteater Aquatics Complex. 

The 'Eaters outscored the Aggies in the first two frames, 4-3, and 3-2, to lead 7-5 at the half. Each team added three in the third to leave UCI up, 10-8. UC Davis outscored the Anteaters, 5-3, in the fourth, to tie it up, 13-13, and force overtime. The Aggies added three in the first overtime frame, and held the Anteaters to just one to take the lead, 16-14. UCI got one back in the second overtime, but couldn't complete the comeback as they fell, 16-15. 

BY THE NUMBERS: Redshirt senior Madi O'Hara and juniors Lauren Hett and Sara Naulty led the Anteaters and each netted three goals.

Mary Hassett added two tallies and Ella Walker recorded seven saves. Pippa Heaver, Chloe Patist, Deirdre Murphy, and Annabelle Mundelius each netted one. 

Chelsea Johnson led the Aggies with five goals. 

HOW IT HAPPENED: The 'Eaters went on a 3-0 spurt to open the first. Mary Hassett kicked off the scoring at the 7:17 mark, with help from Pippa Heaver before Madi O'Hara capitalized on a power play (5:36) to take an early 2-0 lead. Lauren Hett converted on a five-meter attempt at the 4:17 mark to increase the lead, 3-0. The Aggies got on the board as they capitalized on the man advantage at the 2:42 mark. Sara Naulty found the back of the net on an 'Eaters powerplay, with help from Hassett, at the 1:57 mark to maintain the advantage, 4-1. The Aggies netted one before adding another on a five-meter attempt with just 0:01 remaining to pull within one, 4-3, at the horn. 

The Aggies netted two goals to start the second and pull ahead, 5-4, at the 2:44 mark. The Anteaters scored three unanswered to end the second frame. Hassett netted her second of the game (2:20), with help from Sydney Hagan, before Pippa Heaver found the back of the net, with an assist from Sara Naulty at the 1:43 mark. Madi O'Hara added a tally at the 0:22 mark, with help from Hagan, to increase the Anteaters lead, 7-5, at the half. 

UC Davis netted two quick goals to tie it up, 7-7, at the 7:00 mark. O'Hara added a tally at the 5:18 mark before Chloe Patist found the back of the net (4:37), with help from Bella Calderon, to put the 'Eaters back up, 9-7. Deirdre Murphy scored, with an assist from Hett, to increase the lead, 10-7. The Aggies got one back before at the horn to pull within two, 10-8, heading into the final frame. 

The Aggies added two tallies to tie it up, 10-10, at the 6:15 mark. Hett netted back-to-back goals (3:20, 2:18), with the latter coming on the man advantage to put the Anteaters back up by two, 12-10. UC Davis netted two on the power play to tie it up once again, 12-12, at the 1:03 mark. The Aggies added another to pull ahead, 13-12, with just 0:27 remaining. Naulty tied the game with just 0:12 left, with help from Michelle Urkov, to send the game to OT , tied 13-13. 

UC Davis netted two to start the overtime period and pulled ahead, 15-13, with 1:33 remaining. Naulty found the back of the net on the man advantage, with help from Patist, to put the 'Eaters within one, 15-14. The Aggies added a tally before the horn to increase their advantage 16-14. 

Annabelle Mundelius converted on the power play with 0:17 remaining, but the 'Eaters fell short, 16-15.

UP NEXT: The 'Eaters are back in action on Friday, March 6 at 5 p.m. as they travel to UC Santa Barbara for a Big West match.
