'Eaters Fall in Finale of Las Vegas Classic

LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- UC Irvine baseball finished 2-1 over the weekend at the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic following a 7-1 loss to Arizona Sunday afternoon at Las Vegas Ballpark.
  • The story of the day was Arizona starter Luc Fladda who puzzled the Anteater hitters all afternoon. In seven innings, he scattered four hits along with one hit by pitch shutting down the Anteaters in addition to nine strikeouts
  • UCI's offense was held in check until the ninth inning scoring their lone run
  • Arizona took advantage of free passes in the early innings scoring once in the first from it and adding three in the second highlighted by a Caleb Danzeisen RBI triple and run scored
    • The Wildcats built a 7-0 lead in the fifth started off with a double off the wall that came around on a two-run home run

  • Tommy Farmer led the way with a two-hit day out of UCI's five hits
  • UCI starter Cade Castles drew the loss allowing four earned runs in two innings
    • Dane Grant was solid in relief striking out three in 1.2 shutout innings
    • Finnegan Wall helped get out of a bases loaded jam with one of his three strikeouts. He finished with 1.1 innings responsible for three of the runs
    • Danny Suarez finished things out with three one-hit innings of shutout ball striking out three
  • UCI finished even with Arizona and Oregon in the tournament all giong 2-1. Oregon was named champions of the tournament.
  • Zach Fjelstad was the lone Anteater representative on the All-Tournament Team after posting a team-high five RBIs, six hits, and three runs scored while batting .400 for the tournament
UCI returns to Southern California this week starting Tuesday, March 3 with a trip to USC for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch
