IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball gutted out a Friday night 5-3 win over California behind another dominant
Trevor Hansen pitching performance in Anteater Ballpark.
- The Anteater junior was on his game from the start facing the minimum through the first three innings
- A single in the second inning was cut down on a line drive double play to Alonso Reyes
- A leadoff double in the fourth inning was erased on the basepaths on a smart play by Zach Fjelstad and James Castagnola
- Hansen picked it up with the strikeouts adding a pair in each of the third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings
- The offense sputtered through three innings with all nine batters retired, but hit its stride in the fourth inning
- Hits from Frankie Carney and Zach Fjelstad to open the inning put runners into scoring position, and they came home on a Tommy Farmer sacrifice fly and tough at-bat from Alonso Reyes to get a single and make it 2-0 Anteaters
- In the fifth inning, UCI got a gift on a dropped fly ball in left field followed by a bloop double against reliever Quinn Larson.
- Carney grounded a ball to bring home one of the runs for a 3-0 lead
- With two outs and a runner on third base still, Tommy Farmer drew a walk and stole second setting up Reyes again to singled both runners home to go up 5-0
- UCI had multiple chances to build on their lead, but left multiple runners on base in the seventh and eighth innings.
- California finally got to Hansen loading the bases with one out in the seventh inning
- A line-drive by Gannon Snyder into the left field corner was snagged on a diving play by Rowan Felsch for the out saving multiple runs from scoring
- Hideki Prather smashed a single to make it a 5-2 deficit, but the defense cut him down trying to stretch it into a double for the final out of the inning
- Hansen went out for the ninth inning looking to finish what he started getting the first out, but left after a one-out triple on 95 pitches
- Peyton Rodgers entered allowing a double to draw Cal within 5-3
- A groundout and another lineout eventually ended the game for Rodgers' second save and lift UCI to 5-0 on the year
