Huynh Advances to Main Draw Singles at ITA Southwest Regional Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – UC Irvine women's tennis opened competition at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Wednesday, earning two doubles victories and two singles wins from Maily Huynh, who secured her place in the main draw singles Round of 64.
Huynh battled through two qualifying matches to punch her ticket to the main draw. She rallied past USC's Simone Kay, 1-6, 6-1, 10-7, before overcoming Long Beach State's Elen Jantacova, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4, to earn her spot in Thursday's Round of 64.
The Anteaters faced several tough matchups in qualifying singles. Bella Pitchford fell to CSUN's Talia Harper, 4-6, 2-6, while Kara Chen dropped a three-set match to San Diego's Kira Roy, 6-3, 2-6, 6-10. Mackenzie Lukin fell to Hawai'i's Grete Gull, 3-6, 2-6, and Rachel Gee was defeated by Long Beach State's Thea Jagare, 1-6, 4-6.
In doubles action, the Anteaters secured two victories to advance a pair of teams to the Round of 32. Montana Parkinson and Pitchford opened with a dominant 8-2 win over Cal State Fullerton's Dana Kunza and Stina Larsson. Sayuri Parandian and Lukin followed with an 8-1 victory over UC Riverside's Kaylin Kielty and Ava Min.
Quin Brady and Gee fell to Arizona's Zoya Chulak and Ciara Moore, 1-8, while Huynh and Chen dropped an 8-5 decision to Cal State Fullerton's Seha Yu and Johanna Hiesmair.
The Anteaters return to action Thursday, Oct. 16, with main draw singles and the Round of 32 in doubles on the schedule. Parkinson is set to face Pepperdine's Ziva Falkner in the singles Round of 64, while Huynh will also compete in the main draw.
