UC Irvine, San Francisco Play to 0-0 Draw

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer played a hard-fought 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at San Francisco and Negoesco Stadium.

Stiff Competition
  • The first half was solid all around with both sides creating chances and pushing forward, but the defenses also made big plays to keep the half scoreless
  • The best chance for either side was their first of the match:
  • UCI earned a pair of corners and sent one into the box squarely finding Fiona Shin whose header was true, but snagged by the USF keeper in the third minute
  • San Francisco came down in the fourth minute and got a wide-open look for Alicia Osegueda that Laurynn Ziller turned away
  • Ziller came up big stretching her leg out to thwart another close-range opportunity for a save in the 15th minute
  • The match was scoreless through the first 45 with the host Dons just edging UCI in shots, 6-5, and shots on target, 3-2
Keeping It Real
  • The second half was more of the same, opportunistic offenses meeting with stout defensive efforts.
  • Each team's attack pushed the envelope like before, but neither could muster any significant offense. Nine shots between the sides in the half with one on target coming from Clara Samson from distance saved on a dive in the 84th minute.
UC Irvine 0, San Francisco 0
  • Laurynn Ziller stood tall in net making three saves and picking up her second shutout of the season, the team's third
  • UCI is unbeaten in their last four matches (1-0-3) and finish their non-conference road matchups with a mark of 2-1-2 and overall are 2-1-3.
  • On the stat sheet, the host Dons finished with more shots (11-9) and corners (5-4) while they came out even with three shots on goal apiece. UCI stayed under 10 fouls for the fifth time in their six matches and picked up just their second caution of the year.
Next up is a return home for the 'Eaters playing their next four in Anteater Stadium starting Sunday, September 7 hosting Northern Arizona with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
