LEADING OFF
+ UC Irvine has clinched a share of the Big West regular season crown from the weekend in Bakersfield. Any win or Cal Poly loss will sew up an outright Big West title for the program, the third in UC Irvine history joining the 2009 and 2021 teams sitting at 23-4 with one series to go
+ The 'Eaters have locked up the No. 1 seed in the inaugural Big West Championship taking place at Fullerton's Goodwin Field starting May 21. UCI awaits their opponent which will come from the 4 vs. 5 play-in matchup. The 'Eaters open their tournament May 22 playing at 3:00 p.m.
+ UC Irvine is among the nationally ranked after 13 weeks in 2025 with Baseball America moving them up from 24th in their preseason poll to now 12th. UCI sits No. 12 in D1Baseball, Perfect Game USA, and USA Today coaches poll with the NCBWA slotting them at No. 13. The 'Eaters have been ranked all season and as high as Nos. 7 and 8 on April 28.
+ UC Irvine is 6-3 this season against ranked opponents. UCI took 1 of 3 at No. 11 Oregon State, defeated No. 15 UCLA, has a win over No. 24 Nebraska in the season opener, a one-run loss to No. 16 Vanderbilt on a neutral site, and three wins on the road against No. 21 UC Santa Barbara.
+ The Anteater offense stayed steady 37 runs in a 4-0 week keeping their average of 8.3 runs a game and hitting .304 as a team:
ÞÂ
Blake Penso had a week to remember contributing toward all three wins at CSUB with 12 RBI including a 4-hit, 6-RBI, 4-run Friday. + Anteater pitching was tested on the road needing a save in all four wins and the bullpen coming up big on multiple occasions including helping toward a comeback win Tuesday overcoming a six-run deficit
ÞÂ The closer's role was called upon each day starting with
Max Martin earning save in three of the games giving him 12 on the year. He struck out eight in 5.2 innings and stranded 3 of 4 inherited runners.

SCOUTING THE TITANS
Cal State Fullerton has played seven times since the last matchup going 4-3 in that time playing two series at home winning two of three against UC Santa Barbara and dropping two of three last weekend to Hawai'i. CSF is 27-24 overall and their 17-10 Big West mark has them virtually locked into the No. 3 seed in the upcoming tournament.
The Titans and Anteaters are meeting for the 150th time in their histories and second time this season. Just 15 days ago, the sides met in Angel Stadium for the first time with UCI taking that game, 5-1, for their 52nd win in the series to Cal State Fullerton's 97. UCI had failed to win a series at home again CSF until they swept four games in 2021, but the Titans came back in 2023 to open Big West play for another series win at Cicerone Field as part of their most recent trip to an NCAA Regional.
The offense managed just one run and a handful of hits in the previous meeting, but they are still dangerous hitting .292 collectively and averaging just under seven runs a game. They're the Big West leaders in triples and among the top in total hits and on-base percentage. The lineup is a force anywhere you look with Andrew Kirchner's Big West best 66 RBIs, Maddox Latta (.352) and Carter Johnstone (.347) setting the table with 40+ runs each, Max Ortega coming through with big hits in the last two series, and Cam Burdick who had a couple hits against the Anteaters and leads the Big West in sacrifice hits.
Pitching continues to make the grade under head coach and former Anteater pitching guru Jason Dietrich. The team's 5.25 ERA has been built off the weekend rotation that starts with Mikiah Negrete (5-2, 5.02) and his 71 strikeouts that are up there with UCI's leaders
Trevor Hansen and
Ricky Ojeda. A host of others have stepped into and out of the weekend spots with Jayden Harper staking his claim last weekend with five no-hit innings in a win over Hawai'i. Brady Dockan was a problem for UCI in the Tuesday matchup, and he is one of three others with at least seven starts to their name. The bullpen is ready to go at any time led by Andrew Wright in the closer's role with nine and a 1.24 ERA. Ryan Faulks has appeared in 26 games sporting a 2.78 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 32.1 IP, and more impressive seasons come from Jason Blood (4-2, 4.15, 1 Sv, 47.2 IP, 56 K) and Gavin Meyer (3-1, 3.91, 1 Sv, 25.1 IP, 25 K) in a team effort to get them to their winning record to this point
