No. 12 Anteaters Win 5-3 Over No. 15 UCLA

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball came out on top in the top-15 battle Tuesday night in Anteater Ballpark with a 5-3 win over No. 15 UCLA
  • In front of the largest crowd of the season 1,727 fans, UCI gave them something to cheer about early with a huge five-run first inning.
    • Ricky Ojeda got the 'Eaters into the dugout with a scoreless first after allowing the first two hitters to reach
    • UCI got their leadoff man on, and Colin Yeaman followed with a booming home run to left-center to take a 2-0 lead
    • Two batters later, Chase Call followed his lead homering to nearly the same spot and doubling the lead, 4-0
    • With two outs, UCI got another rally going as James Castagnola doubled down the right field line and scored on Zach Fjelstad's single for a 5-0 advantage
  • UCLA answered back with a home run to leadoff their second inning and make it 5-1, but the pitching took over for both sides the rest of the way
    • Ojeda gave up that home run, but settled things down and would earn his NCAA-leading ninth win of the season in a controlled start of two innings
    • Freshman Tyler Foster followed suit going 2.2 scoreless innings using a double play to get out of trouble in the third and striking out one
    • Frankie Carney got four outs in a row in left field during Foster's outing including a spectacular leaping catch into the fence, and throwing out a baserunner trying to stretch a single into a double
    • Danny Suarez picked up Foster in the fifth getting a flyout with runners on base to end the frame. He went 2.1 innings himself picking up five strikeouts on his way
    • David Butler stepped in for Suarez after allowing the first two on in the eighth and getting a pair of groundouts including a double play to keep it a 5-1 ballgame
    • Max Martin walked the tightrope allowing a pinch-hit two-run single and allowing the go-ahead run to come to the plate, but got a strikeout for the final out to seal the win, 5-3
  • UCI's offense all came in the first inning as UCLA's pitching scattered four hits and three additional baserunners down the final seven innings
    • Yeaman's home run gave him a team-high 12 this season while blasting his ninth and No. 28 for his UCI career
    • Each had two-hit games along with Anthony Martinez as part of UCI's nine hits
    • Frankie Carney reached three times and scored a run, but saw his 18-game hitting streak end Tuesday
  • UC Irvine improves to 6-3 on the season against ranked teams and 3-2 against the Big Ten. The 'Eaters are 29-9 overall on the season
Next up is a Big West showdown this weekend at Cal Poly between the two programs at the top of the conference standings. First pitch Friday, April 25, is a 6:00 p.m. to start the weekend series.
