IRVINE, Calif. --- Trevor Hansen dealt a 120-pitch gem shutting out Hawai'i, 4-0, Friday night at Anteater Ballpark for a complete game shutout and series win.
- The sophomore righty had it going early retiring the first five hitters before a walk in the second.
- Hansen's first hit allowed came with two out in the third - one of three hits allowed all night
- Hansen allowed six baserunners in total with five of them coming with two outs and never allowed a runner past first base
- In addition, Hansen tied a career with 10 strikeouts including three looking and ended the game on one of those
- The defense was steady including a spectacular play to end the sixth inning by Will Bermudez flipping a ball with his glove for the force-out and second base
- Hansen is the 34th Anteater to throw a CG SHO, and it's the 58th in program history
- He's the first Anteater to throw one since Michael Frias in 2021 when he did it twice including the most recent one in the NCAA Regional vs. Nevada
- He improves to 6-0 on the season and 12-4 in his career
- Hawai'i hung tough even after losing their starting pitcher after one inning. Starter Sebastian Gonzalez was hit by a line drive on the elbow on the second batter of the game. He finished the inning, but did not come back out. Six Rainbow Warrior pitchers held UCI in check for just four runs on seven hits and five walks
- UCI's big offensive contribution came to start the second inning jumping on reliever Charlie Adamson
- James Castagnola shot a single up the middle, and Chase Call followed with an infield single with each runner moving up on an errant throw
- Blake Penso pounded a double into the gap to score both and put UCI up, 2-0
- The 'Eaters added two more as they loaded the bases from a walk and two singles
- Colin Yeaman saw his hitting streak end at 21 games Friday night, but hit a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 3-0
- UCI's fourth run came on a passed ball of the catcher's glove to score Will Bermudez, 4-0
- Blake Penso was the hitting star with two hits and two RBIs, the only player to have multiple of either stat
- Frankie Carney reached base three times including a hit to extend his hit streak to 17 games
- The win secures another series victory giving UCI nine in 10 weekends
- Overall, UCI improves to 27-9, and are 15-2 in Big West play tied atop the standings with Cal Poly
The series wraps up Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
