Gerbing; Anteaters Runners-Up At USF Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- UC Irvine made a run but came up just short, finishing second at the USF Invitational held at the Olympic Club Lake Course Tuesday.

The Anteaters shot a 54-hole total 885 (294-296-295), finishing two shots behind tournament winner BYU (883). UCI had 28 birdies as a team, second most among the field with 166 pars. The Anteaters had a tournament best scoring average of 4.87 (-6) on Par 5s.

Freshman Katherine Gerbing was the runner-up, firing a three-over par 216 (71-75-70) in the two days. She tied for the team's lowest score of the tournament on the final round with a one-under 70, moving up the leaderboard five spots. She was consistent, recording 39 pars, the fifth most among the field. This is Gerbing's best career-finish, placing in the Top 10 in three of the last four tournaments.

Freshman Alona Avery was tied for ninth with a score of 221 (73-71-77), her fifth Top 10 finish of the season. Sophomore Alyson Sor was tied for 14th with a 54-hole score of 223 (72-76-75), while freshman Katelyn Kong was tied for 26th at 228 (78-74-76) and junior Kiana Briggs was tied for 40th with a total of 232 (80-78-74).

Playing as an individual, HaYoung Lee had a career performance, placing seventh with a score of 220 (73-70-77). She posted her collegiate best 70 on the second round matching Gerbing for team-best. Junior Jasmine Chen ended in a tie for 26th with a score of 228 (73-78-77).

The Anteaters will now wait for the Big West Championships on April 13-15 at the Spanish Trail Country Club in Las Vegas, NV.
