'Eaters Fall in Big West Opener, 10-8

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball opened Big West play Friday night in Anteater Ballpark playing late into the night in a 10-8 loss to Long Beach State.
  • The Anteaters were in a hole early falling behind 3-0 after the first inning and giving up five runs in the second staring up at a 8-1 deficit.
  • Long Beach State did their part with the bats with seven hits in the first two innings, but UCI's defense misplayed a double allowing two of the runs in the first, the arms walked four hitters in the second with three coming around to score, and two runs came home on wild pitches
  • UCI's hitters battled back as Anthony Martinez, who drove in the run in the first, knocked in two more in the third inning to claw back with 8-3.
  • Down six in the sixth inning, UCI finally got to the LBSU starter putting up four runs
    • Zach Fjelstad went the other way to score Martinez and get things going
    • Will Bermudez shot a ball inside the third baseline for two more runs
    • Colin Yeaman singled up the middle to make it a 9-7 game
  • UCI could not find all the runs getting one more in the ninth from Fjelstad and putting the go-ahead run at the plate, but a foulout ended the night
  • Danny Suarez was hit for seven runs in under two innings to draw the loss. His bullpen mates kept the game close as Jaxton Andeel, David Utagawa, and David Butler each went two innings while allowing two unearned runs
The series continues Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch as Jack Ross takes the mound for UC Irvine against LBSU's Josh Donegan
