RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Irvine men's track & field team won five of their eight events Saturday at the UCR Spring Classic.

Jacob Hawkins led the way as a double champion in the shot put and discus. In the shot put, Hawkins was the only athlete to surpass 50 feet and recorded his best mark of the day on his final attempt where he hit 17.76 meters (58-3.25). Junior
Chimobi Onye was the runner-up (15.11m/49-7).

Hawkins then closed out the meet with a season-best 56.00m (183-8) in the discus. That distance came on his first throw and was enough to hold off Long Beach State graduate and former Big West champion Sebastian Coleman by eight inches. Junior
Jake Troxell added a personal-record 45.94m (150-8) to place third overall.

Logan Peyton cruised to a victory in the javelin where he recorded a season-best 65.16m (213-9).

Kenechukwu Okonkwo won the triple jump for the second week in a row. After notching a PR and NCAA-leading 15.83m last Saturday, Okonkwo opened the competition with a leap of 15.44m (50-8). That stood as the best of the meet, edging out UC Riverside's Kyan Thomas.

AJ Taylor was the top finisher in the 400m hurdles (55.57).

Ashton Fegel (48.25) and sophomore
Roman Mendoza (49.49) both posted lifetime bests in the 400m. They placed second and fourth, respectively.

The Anteaters are back in action next weekend when they host the Vince O'Boyle Track & Field Classic, March 28-29.
