No. 20 'Eaters Power 12-5 Win for Sweep of Louisiana

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball roared back from an early deficit in the finale against Louisiana in Anteater Ballpark to hang a 12-5 victory Sunday and complete the weekend sweep.
  • After a scoreless first inning for the first time in the series, the Ragin' Cajuns got the jump with a four-run second inning. They put up three hits, but also used their elite bunt game to force an Anteater throwing error and chaos on the basepaths to set the tone up, 4-0.
  • UC Irvine responded with a big fly off the bat of Will Bermudez with two outs to cut the deficit to 4-3
  • Louisiana countered with a two-out home run of their own to get a run back and lead, 5-3, in the third
  • UCI homered right back as Rowan Felsch muscled a ball to right-center to get back even, 5-5
  • The UCI offense continued to roll scoring multiple runs in four consecutive innings with a two-run double into the corner by Anthony Martinez giving UCI its first lead, 7-5, in the fourth
  • Two more runs in the fifth highlighted by a Jacob McCombs home run to start the inning to straightaway center field made it an 9-5 ballgame
  • Louisiana had multiple threats to get back in the ballgame loading the bases in both the sixth and seventh innings.
    • Riley Kelly entered in the sixth for starter Trevor Hansen and put to runners of his own on to load the bases, but got a groundball to first base to keep them loaded
    • Kelly loaded the bases again in the seventh before handing off to David Butler who struck out his lone hitter and end the inning scoreless again
  • The crushing blow came in the Anteaters' seventh inning as Chase Call rocked a home run to left-center for three more runs with two outs and put the game out of reach, 12-5
  • The offense belted out 13 hits, seven for extra bases, including just the third-ever four-HR game for UCI in Anteater Ballpark
    • Zach Crandall had his second three-hit game in as many days scoring once, and was joined by McCombs whose three hits all went for extra bases
    • Bermudez led the way with four RBIs and Call added three on the back of his home run
  • Trevor Hansen fought through the tough early innings to throw 5.2 innings, tie a career high with eight strikeouts, and notch his first win of the season
    • David Butler earned a hold as he struck out three of the four outs he recorded
    • Jaxton Andeel made his Anteater Ballpark debut striking out two in a scoreless ninth
UC Irvine has now won five straight including a 4-0 week. It heads to San Diego for a midweek matchup Tuesday night before returning to Cicerone Field for a three-game set with Long Beach State to open Big West play.
