Hernandez Reaches 1K Milestone in 77-57 Win over CBU

IRVINE, Calif. – Senior Hunter Hernandez scored her 1,000th career point in UC Irvine women's basketball's 77-57 win over California Baptist University Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

Hernandez, who entered today needing 21 points to reach the milestone, finished with a game-high 27. She scored her 1,000th career point at the free throw line with 6:12 remaining in the fourth quarter. The 5-foot-9 guard went 8-for-20 from the field with three triples, and was a perfect 8-of-8 at the charity stripe. She is the 16th member of UCI women's basketball's 1,000-point club.

"It's amazing, I wasn't expecting to be emotional, but I kind of was," Hernandez said of reaching 1,000 career points. "I've been here for so long that when I got here I was a kid, now I feel like I'm an adult. To be here with the coaches and all my teammates who have come in and out of the program, it means so much to have grown up here and reach these achievements. It feels so good to be surrounded by people who support me and show me so much love."

The Anteaters (9-2) have now won eight in a row to tie the third-longest win streak in program history.

BY THE NUMBERS: In addition to her 27 points, Hernandez had four rebounds, four assists and one steal with zero turnovers.

Senior Jada Wynn recorded her third-straight double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Wynn also dished out four assists.

Sophomore Lauryn Madsen had 12 points on four threes, while junior Summah Hanson notched seven points and five boards in her season debut. Freshman Nohe'alani Stores chipped in six points and six rebounds.

As a team, the 'Eaters shot 39.7% from the field and 37.5% from distance. They held the Lancers to 31.6% overall and 18.5% from deep. UCI also won the battle in turnovers forced (15-7) and capitalized on those miscues, outscoring California Baptist, 24-3, in points off turnovers.

Lauren Olsen paced CBU with 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED: California Baptist (6-4) went up 5-0 before Hernandez got UC Irvine on the board with a three at the 6:27 mark. The Anteaters took control from there as they outscored CBU, 20-0, over the next five minutes. The Lancers ended their scoring drought with a layup and a triple in the final 40 seconds to make it a 10-point game.

Madsen sparked a 16-8 UCI run in the second period with all four of her 3-pointers coming in the five-and-a-half minute stretch. Her fourth three followed a Hernandez trey and put the 'Eaters on top by 18 with 23.4 seconds on the clock. California Baptist scored the final three points at the foul line as the home team took a 41-26 lead into the locker room.

CBU opened the third frame on a 6-2 spurt to close the gap to 43-32 with 7:28 remaining. That was the closest the Lancers would get as Wynn and Hernandez answered with back-to-back layups. After trading buckets, a Wynn 3-pointer and Stores layup made it 54-36 at the 3:39 mark. UC Irvine continued to roll, closing the quarter with a 6-0 rally capped by Naomy Zonzon-Huyghe's driving layup at the buzzer for a 60-38 cushion.

The Anteaters kept their foot on the gas, going up by as many as 25 in the fourth period.

UP NEXT: UC Irvine closes out non-conference action and the 2025 calendar year on the road next week. The 'Eaters head to New Mexico State on Tuesday, Dec. 16, before making their way to UTEP on Thursday, Dec. 18.
