Lyons' Brace Lifts UCI to 2-1 Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer started well and finished stronger Wednesday night in Anteater Stadium for a 2-1 win over UC Davis.

Pride Points
  • The offenses started fast with lots of action in the 18-yard boxes and four shots including three from the Aggies
  • The scoring began early with the fastest goal scored by any team in a UC Irvine game this season
    • The 'Eaters built from the back up the left wing and into the UC Davis third
    • Gage Lyons flicked a ball ahead sparking Shane Kaemerle into the 18-yard box
    • He dished to Lyons who ran on goal and finished around the Aggie keeper inside the far post for a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute
  • UCI continued to search for more getting called for offside three times in the next eight minutes and four times in the half
  • UC Davis held a majority of the possession at 69% and had the shot lead at 6-4, but could not turn anything promising on goal
  • The Anteaters actually did not commit a foul in the first half as they held onto their 1-0 lead
To The Limit
  • The foulless half didn't last long as each side drew a foul in the first 90 seconds of the second half
  • UC Davis finally put a shot on goal heading a corner softly that Joe O'Shaughnessy collected in the 65th minute
  • The first caution didn't come until the 75th minute, but then a flurry appeared with four in four minutes and two for each side
  • In the tense contest, Gage Lyons returned and gave UCI a little breathing room in the 82nd minute
    • The Anteaters forced a turnover at midfield and Marcus Lee bolted toward goal
    • His lead pass perfectly connected with Lyons who finished similarly to his first-half goal and doubled the lead, 2-0
  • The Aggies kept hope alive with some key subs including a change at keeper following the goal, and cut into the deficit in the 87th minute
    • A corner kick volleyed around the 6-yard box before settled on the right side of goal for Andrew Dutra to volley home to make it 2-1
  • The final three minutes brought the energy, and UCI held the slim lead with thanks to key reserves in the final minutes Justin Conyers and Darwin Lopez making timely play
UC Irvine 2, UC Davis 1
  • The Anteater win bumped them up one place in the Big West standings now at third on 13 points with a 3-0-4 mark
    • UCI extended its streaks to seven straight unbeaten and three straight wins
    • The Anteater overall record now stands a 8-3-5 all but locking up a winning season in 2025
  • Gage Lyons' pair of goals double his total on the season now at four and tied for second on the club
    • His game-winner is his second this season as he's the first Anteater to record multiple GWG on the year
  • He earned clever assists on each goal on the night from Shane Kaemerle and Marcus Lee
    • Lee's assist is his fourth of the season to lead the team, and he's recorded an assist in each of the last three matches, all on game-winning goals
    • Kaemerle's assist goes down as the first assist and point of his collegiate career for the second-year Anteater in his 16th match
  • O'Shaughnessy in net saw his shutout streak end at 288:35 with the late goal, but improves to 8-3-5 on the year while picking up one save
The season continues with just two matches left in the regular season. UCI's final road match is next at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 25. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. as UCI has a chance to clinch a berth in the Big West Championship.
