
UC Irvine Posts Impressive Marks at UCR Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's cross country team had a strong showing in the 6K Invite and 5K Open Saturday morning at the UC Riverside Invitational. Both races were held at the UCR Agricultural Operations Course, which is the home of the 2024 Big West Championships.
Senior Anna Vogtmann led the Anteaters in the 6K, taking third in a field of 223 athletes. She was the top Big West finisher, completing the course in 19:58.2. In her first race of the fall, Vogtmann was just under six seconds off her personal and school-record mark of 19:52.8.
Junior Makena Castillo clocked a lifetime-best 20:42.6 to place 30th overall. Her time ranks eighth in program history.
Sophomore Kaia Schmidt crossed the finish line in a PR 20:52.6, which puts her 10th on UCI's all-time charts.
Also setting personal bests were senior Maggie Sczupak (21:03.6), freshman Cynthia Herrera (21:09.9), senior Malia Gay (21:19.3), junior Nicole Contreras (21:26.3), freshman Daisy Penney (21:29.0), freshman Jackie Pan (21:30.8) and freshman Liana Lee (21:51.1).
As a team, the 'Eaters were fourth with 184 points. They came in behind Utah State (67), Cal Poly (123) and California Baptist (128).
UC Irvine won the women's 5K Open with 68 points. Freshman Rachel Moen led the Anteaters as she was fifth out of 280 with a time of 17:49.0. Senior Montgomery Allison was also among the top-10, taking seventh at 17:53.4.
Freshman Anna Soares was next across the line for UCI in 15th (18:05.8).
Sophomore Marjourie Lopez (18:18.9), senior Abby Binder (18:42.2), senior Olivia Liuson (18:44.5) and freshman Breckyn Kornachuk (18:47.5) rounded out the Anteaters' top-seven.
UC Irvine will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 11, at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Springfield, Oregon.
