No. 13 UC Irvine Done In by Big Inning

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball were the victim of a big inning Friday night in a 14-9 loss to CSUN at Anteater Ballpark
  • In a 3-3 game in the third inning, the Matadors singled three times to start the inning to break the tie and lead, 4-3
    • An error on a sac bunt by Trevor Hansen ended his night with the bases loaded nobody out
    • A long sac fly followed by a groundout gave the 'Eaters two outs and trailing just 5-3
    • A pair of walks kept the inning going and forced in the third run of a frame
    • CSUN got the big hits when it mattered though clearing the bases with a double to double the lead, 6-3
    • After another walk and another pitching change, a home run added three more runs for a nine-run inning and a 12-3 deficit for UCI
  • The Anteaters fought back with a four-run sixth and runs in the seventh and eighth innings getting as trailing five runs
    • The 'Eaters were within striking distance in the sixth as Anthony Martinez gave it a ride to the gap in right-center, but it was run down while crashing into the fence by the CSUN right fielder to take away a potential three-run hit and end the rally
  • UCI pitching was largely ineffective as all five Anteaters allowed a run despite only five of the 14 runs allowed being earned
    • David Utagawa fared the best pitching hitless baseball for the final three innings with no earned runs and three of the team's seven strikeouts
    • The defense contributed to the woes with three errors costing nine unearned runs
  • UCI hitting did managed to out-hit CSUN with 13 of their own and at least one from every batter
    • Anthony Martinez was the only Anteater without an RBI despite a pair of doubles
    • Chase Call reached three times scoring twice and hitting a home run
    • The bats also struck out just two times with none until the final out of the eighth inning
The weekend and regular season concludes Saturday, May 25, with a 1:00 p.m. start. It will be Senior Day with the seniors for both teams honored pregame with a ceremony that begins at 12:30 p.m.
