No. 5 UC Irvine Upended By No. 14 Lewis, 3-2

HONOLULU, Hawaii – No. 5 UC Irvine suffered a five-set loss to No. 14 Lewis at the OUTRIGGER Invitational at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.

UC Irvine went up 2-1 before dropping the final two sets (25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25, 11-15). The Anteaters, who snap their seven-match winning streak, go to 13-5 overall, while Lewis is 11-9.

The biggest difference in the boxscore was Lewis' 12-7 advantage in blocks.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Hilir Henno posted a match-best 24 kills, the sixth time he has recorded 20 or more kills this season. He also had six digs
>Opposite William D'Arcy pounded 17 kills after having a career-high 19 the night before
>Middle blocker Connor Campbell had a career-high 13 kills, hitting .500 (13-3-20) with three total blocks
>Libero Cole Power continued to play great defense with a match-best 12 digs
>Middle blocker Maxim Grigoriev fired three aces, put down 10 kills and had a team-best four total blocks
>Setter Brett Sheward totaled 54 set assists and six digs
>Outside hitter Akhil Tangutur had a season-high 10 digs for the second consecutive night to go with eight kills
>The Flyers had four players with double-figure kills, led by Daniel Haber's 17 kills and nine digs

FIRST SET
>Maxim Grigoriev had a kill and ace to get UCI started
>Five straight points by the Flyers moved Lewis in front 19-15
>UCI answered with a block by William D'Arcy and Grigoriev followed by two kills by Akhil Tangutur and a kill by Grigoriev to tie it up, 19-19
>A block by Grigoriev and Brett Sheward was followed by a Hilir Henno kill put the Anteaters up 23-21
>Henno would end the set with a kill, 25-22
>The Anteaters out-scored Lewis 10-3 to close out the set

SECOND SET
>UCI led 5-4 before the Flyers rolled off six in a row on four kills, an ace and a block, 10-5
>Joe Karlous entered the match and dished a pair of balls to D'Arcy for kills, 7-10
>A kill and ace by Grigoriev closed the gap to 12-13
>Lewis responded with three in a row to expand their lead, 16-12 then another three-point run which included consecutive kills by Max Roquet made it 20-15
>A kill and ace by D'Arcy inched UCI to 18-21
>The Flyers would record the final two kills, 25-19
>Lewis hit .464 (15-2-28)

THIRD SET
>Two kills by Connor Campbell and one by D'Arcy propelled UCI out to a 6-2 lead
>Back-to-back kills by Henno extended the advantage to 13-8
>A Flyer service error and Campbell smash from the middle forced a Lewis timeout, 21-14
>D'Arcy banged it off the block for the set-winner 25-18

FOURTH SET
>Kills by D'Arcy, Henno and Sheward got the Anteaters out to a quick 3-0 lead
>The Flyers would move in front 8-7 with three-consecutive points
>A 7-2 run by Lewis broke open the set 17-14
>A Lewis service error and a Grigoriev kill kept UCI close 14-18
>UCI closed to 19-22 on a block by Tangutur and Campbell then were with three again (20-23) on a kill by D'Arcy
>Lewis scored the final two points on kills, 25-20

FIFTH SET
>Lewis led 4-2 before Campbell had a solo block
>A UCI service and attack error helped Lewis to the 6-3 lead
>Kills by Tangutur and D'Arcy closed the gap to 5-6
>Kills by D'Arcy and Henno plus a Flyer attack error helped UCI stay close, 10-11
>The Flyers would never relinquish the lead out-scoring UCI 4-1 to end the set, 15-11
