UCI Returns To Big West Action With A Trip To UC San Diego

IRVINE, Calif.— UCI resumes Big West action with a match at UC San Diego on Mar. 9 with first serve at 12 p.m. in La Jolla.

  • UC Irvine enters the weekend with a 4-8 overall record and 1-2 in Big West play
  • UCI went 1-2 on the week, earning their lone win against Hope International (W, 7-0) before dropping two contests in the Midwest (at Chicago State, L 6-1, and Milwaukee, L, 5-2)
  • Versus Hope International…
    • Sophomore Asha Gidwani was paired with graduate student Jenna Schlatter on court two in doubles play. The duo dropped the first point but came back with six unanswered to take the 6-1 win.
    • Over at No. 3 doubles, Mia Totah made her first appearance since the 2021-22 season while sophomore Mikaela Hinton had her collegiate debut. The pairing dominated as they clinched the doubles point with their 6-0 victory.
    • UC Irvine lined up at singles with Haily Huynh (No. 1), Larissa Teramura (No. 2), Carolyna Fowler (No. 3), Emily Fowler (No. 4), Nour Khayat (No. 5), and Cydney Yamamoto (No. 6). This was the first time all season the Anteaters played matches at these positions.
  • At Chicago State…
    • The Cougars jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point with their 6-0 win on court three before grabbing a 6-4 victory on court two.
    • Chicago State continued their scoring run with points at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to go ahead 3-0 in the match. These were the only two individual matches completed in two sets.
    • Sophomore Larissa Teramura tallied the lone Anteater point to halt Chicago State's momentum. At the No. 5 spot, Teramura collected the first set win 6-1. The sophomore fell 6-3 in the second game but was able to rally for a 6-1 set three victory.
  • At Milwaukee…
    • The doubles portion of the match was played clinch and the Panthers took the point with their 6-2 win at No. 1 and 6-3 victory at No. 2.  
    • MKE added their second point of the contest on court five in singles with two 6-3 set wins. Carolyna Fowler drew the match within one point, 2-1, as she took down her opponent 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6.
    • The Panthers went on to clinch the match at No. 3 after taking the second set tiebreaker, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
    • Graduate student Jenna Schlatter earned UC Irvine's second point after taking Babette Burgersdijk to three sets at the No. 1 spot. Schlatter won the first game 6-4 and then handily won the third 6-1.
  • UC Irvine leads the all-time series over UC San Diego, 3-1, including last season's down to the wire 4-3 victory

Scouting UC San Diego
UC San Diego enters the match with a 4-10 record and are searching for their first conference win after dropping three Big West matches. The Tritons have won twice already this week as they took on Weber State (W, 5-2) and UT Rio Grande Valley (W, 4-3).

Sophie Pearson and Katelyn Vu each have four individual wins in dual match action, a team best. Pearson earned three of her wins at No. 5 singles with the other at No. 4. On the other hand, Vu has won hers at No. 4 (1), No. 5 (2), and No. 6 (1).
 
Pearson's winning excellence carries over to her doubles matches where she is 9-3 with partner Naomi Nguyen. The duo has played nine matches at the No. 3 spot (7-2), but have also made three appearances at No. 2 (2-1).
