No. 19 Anteaters Take 5-4 Tuesday Win

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball played a tight one prevailing 5-4 Tuesday night in Anteater Ballpark defeating California Baptist.
  • The Anteaters stay unbeaten going to 10-0 on the season and extending their program-best start to a season
  • The win is the 16th consecutive dating back to last season for the 'Eaters now officially the second-longest in the history of the program
  • The first five frames were scoreless as UC Irvine starter Brandon Luu and CBU starter Jacob Wilson were solid pitching around a handful of baserunners
  • UCI's offense all came in the third inning scoring all five runs and three of their four hits
    • Wilson exited after loading the bases from three walks to start the frame
    • Woody Hadeen singled home the first run, and his baserunning helped stay out of the double play to score another to make it 2-0
    • Thomas McCaffrey's looper to center field got down scoring two more including Hadeen to go up 4-0
    • Jo Oyama skied a ball off the right field wall to score McCaffrey and make it a 5-0 game
  • The Lancers responded with a four-run fourth in the very next frame
    • Brandon Luu loaded the bases from a hit and two HBP, but got a foulout before he was relieved
    • Ryder Brooks took over and allowed the first run on a wild pitch
    • A walk to load the bases again was followed by consecutive singles to plate three runs and close the Anteater lead to 5-4
    • Brooks got a flyout and struck out the final batter holding runners on the corners and the one-run lead
  • UC Irvine's bullpen made the slim lead stand up between Brooks, Tim Grack, Cameron Wheeler, and David Utagawa for the next four innings allowing just two base runners
  • The ninth inning got dicey as Ricky Tibbett came on quickly getting two outs. A two-out single followed by a hot shot that went off the glove of Oyama and third base to put two runners in scoring position and two outs
  • Tibbett made the pitch when it mattered striking out the final hitter for the win and his fourth save of the year in four opportunities.
  • Starter Luu picked up the win throwing 3.1 effective innings exiting the game without a run allowed to go to 3-0 in four career pitching appearances
  • Hadeen had two of the four UCI hits, he and McCaffrey were the only 'Eaters to have a hit, run, and RBI on the night
  • Caden Kendle just managed to extend his on-base streak to a record 53 consecutive games beating out a double play ball in the seventh inning. He did see hit streaks of 12 straight and 16 straight at home end
  • Others streaks that held up were Myles Smith now a run in 12 consecutive games, Hadeen 11 straight with a hit, and he extended his on-base streak to 21 games along with Oyama now at 34
UCI now heads on the road for four games this weekend playing two each against Fresno State and Columbia starting Thursday night
