Max Daniels leads the field in the decathlon after the first day of the UCR Spring Classic Multis Thursday at the UC Riverside Track & Field Facility.

Through five events, Daniels totaled 3,892 points, and will take a 126-point lead into tomorrow's action.

Daniels started the meet with the top marks in the 100m (10.83), long jump and shot put. He established a personal-record 7.34 meters (24-1) in the long jump, which ranks 10th in program history. The Santa Maria, California, native also registered a lifetime-best 13.58m (44-6.75) in the shot put.

In the high jump, Daniels cleared 1.78 meters (5-10) to tie for second before closing out the afternoon with a time of 50.68 in the 400m.

The final five events of the decathlon will take place tomorrow, starting with the 110m hurdles at 11 a.m.
