Hawkins Takes Down Long-Standing School Record

FULLERTON, Calif. - Jacob Hawkins broke a 41-year-old school record in the discus to lead the UC Irvine men's track & field team at the Challenge Cup Friday at Titan Track Complex.
 
On his first attempt of the finals, and fourth throw of the day, Hawkins unleashed a personal-best 59.03m (193-8). He broke the record of 58.44m (191-9), which was set by Ken Mills back in 1983. Hawkins won the event by over 12 feet. He also took first in the shot put with a lifetime-best 17.83m (58-6), which ranks fifth in program history.
 
Justin Willingham, who broke the school record in the shot put last weekend, was the runner-up in both the shot (17.59m/57-8.5) and discus. He established a PR 54.68m (179-4) in the latter event where he moved up to No. 7 on UCI's all-time charts.
 
Alan Vuong matched his season-best clearance of 2.01m (6-7) to win the high jump. Liam Miksic (60.52m/198-6) also took second in the javelin.
 
On the track, Alex Skalmowski was the top finisher in the 100m, clocking in at 10.76 seconds.
 
Cameron Smith posted the Anteaters' best time of the young season in the steeplechase at 9:14.07, and AJ Sager added a lifetime-best 9:25.11.
 
Joshua Schuld took third in the 1500m, crossing the finish line in a season-best 3:53.61. Zeid Hussain (3:58.69) was fifth and Juan Chantaca was seventh with a season-best 3:59.63. In the 3000m, Jacob Bustamante ran a personal-record 8:31.88 to come in fourth.
 
Drew Pickett led the 'Eaters in the 110m hurdles with a third-place showing (14.29). Jarel Sayles (14.40) and Josh Farmer (15.01) added season bests.
 
Roman Mendoza also took third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.33.
 
Mendoza, Farmer, Bushnell and Ty Sheridan closed out the meet with a victory in the 4x400 relay where they registered a season-best 3:14.24.
 
In the team standings, UCI finished second behind Long Beach State.
 
Up next for UC Irvine is the UCR Multis (March 21-22) and the Aztec Invitational (March 22-23).
