No. 21 'Eaters Complete Road Sweep, 10-7

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- UC Irvine baseball went into Greer Field at Turchin Stadium Sunday and beat Tulane, 10-7, to sweep the weekend road trip and go to 6-0 on the young season.
  • Both offenses were quiet until the third inning when UCI took the lead on a Caden Kendle sacrifice fly in the top half to lead, 1-0. Tulane answered back with a single to tie it and a two-run home run to go ahead, 3-1
  • The Anteaters returned the favor in the fourth with their own two-run home run by Jo Oyama to tie things at 3-3. A pair of hit by pitches to load the bases and force in the go-ahead run later in the inning to put UCI back up by one, 4-3
  • UCI put some distance between them and the Green Wave with a four-run fifth. Will Bermudez's liner off the center fielder's glove gave him a two-run triple, and RBIs by Abraham Garcia-Pacheco and Anthony Martinez made it a 7-3 ballgame
  • Single runs in the sixth, a Bermudez sac fly, and seventh, a Chase Call two-out homer, gave UCI it's biggest lead of the afternoon, 10-7
  • Three home runs down the stretch by Tulane closed the gap, but Ricky Tibbett did enough to close things out with a 10-7 win.
  • Freshman Trevor Hansen weathered a tough third inning to pitch five inning Sunday and qualify for his first career win. His five innings were a career high as were the seven strikeouts he picked up.
  • Biggest day at the plate went to Bermudez with two extra-base hits, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Oyama and Call each had two hits and three runs driving home three between them. Caden Kendle had a two-RBI day and reached twice to extend his on-base streak to 49 games
The Anteaters return to Southern California where they play at home next hosting San Diego, Friday, March 1, and Michigan, Saturday, March 2, and ending the weekend in Dodger Stadium, Sunday, March 3, in the finale of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic vs. UCLA.

Postgame Thoughts from coach Orloff
"it's a great weekend. It's really hard to sweep, especially a good program that's well-coached. Our first road trip of the year, it's a really good weekend for us."

"Hansen was really good; the amount of swings and misses he got, and especially with the way this park was playing today, it was going to be offensive. He went five and he's throwing on Sunday's for a reason, we've seen that, and that was exciting."

"That's why the offense is good because it's 1 through 9. It hasn't been one guy it's been a lot of guys. Bermudez had a really good game, Bam had a really good Sunday two weeks in a row. It's fun because everyone's contributing."
