N0. 7 UC Irvine Topples No. 5 Stanford Again

Box Score PALO ALTO, Calif. – For a second consecutive night, No. 7 UC Irvine toppled No. 5 Stanford 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 25-21) at Maples Pavilion Saturday.

The Anteaters improve to 8-4 overall, sweeping the season series against the Cardinal who go to 7-5 on the year.

Outside hitter Hilir Henno was a kill shy of his career-high with a match-best 28. He hit .345 (28-8-58) and tied his season best with five total blocks (1 solo).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blocker Connor Campbell tied his season-high with 10 kills, hitting .474 (10-1-19). He also registered two block assists
>In his second start of the season, outside hitter Akhil Tangutur posted a season-high eight kills and nine digs in the win.
>William D'Arcy and Maxim Grigoriev each added seven kills with D'Arcy totaling a career-best 10 digs and Grigoriev with a team-high five block assists
>Libero Cole Power had a season-high 13 digs
>Setter Brett Sheward tossed 51 set assists and had five digs and three total blocks
>UC Irvine held an advantage in hitting percentage (.343-.254), digs (51-45), while Stanford led in blocks 12-9.5
>Four Stanford players recorded double-figure kills, topped by Alex Rottman's 15

FIRST SET
>Akhil Tangutur fired two aces, one softly placed and one ripped, to give UCI a 12-9 lead
>A UCI service error and two kills by the Cardinal tied the set at 17-17
>A pair of kills moved Stanford in front 22-20, before back-to-back Hilir Henno kills knotted it at 22 all
>Following a Stanford timeout, a block by Henno and Maxim Grigoriev was followed by a Henno kill to end a long rally and put the Anteaters at set point, 24-22
>Henno had a big dig then was fed a set for a kill to end the game, 25-22
>UCI would score the final five points of the set
>Henno had 10 kills in the first set

SECOND SET
>Consecutive blocks both assisted by Grigoriev helped UCI to a 4-0 lead
>Kills by Grigoriev and William D'Arcy made it 6-2
>UCI used a kill by Henno, a Stanford attack error, a kill by D'Arcy and a block by Grigoriev and Tangutur to stretch the lead to 10-4
>Stanford would chip away and would out-score UCI 7-1 to take a 21-19 lead
>UCI responded with a 6-1 run to close out the set 25-22. Henno had three kills in the run and Brett Sheward had the winner muscling the ball over the net for the kill

THIRD SET
>Three UCI hitting errors, two on blocks gave Stanford the 4-1 lead
>Three Cardinal kills increased the lead to 8-3
>Stanford would hold a 15-8 advantage before UCI came alive scoring six in a row started by kills from Grigoriev and D'Arcy and a block by the duo then capped with scrappy defense leading to a Tangutur kill before he bounced another off the block for a kill, 14-15
>The teams would trade points until Stanford had four unanswered, three on kills, to move out to a 23-18 lead
>Stanford would win the set on a UCI service error, 25-20

FOURTH SET
>A kill by Tangutur then a solo block and kill by Henno helped UCI to a 9-7 lead
>It was a short lived lead as Stanford scored the next two
>A 4-1 run by UCI that featured two Cardinal attack errors and kills by Henno and Tangutur gave the Anteaters a 16-13 lead
>A kill by Grigoriev and two by Henno made it 19-15
>A kill by Sheward and a block by Henno and Campbell forced a Stanford timeout, 22-17
>A block and kill by Stanford delayed the match point which came with a serve into the net by the Cardinal handing UCI the 25-21 win

>UCI has won four straight against Stanford
>Henno has recorded double-figures in every match this season, including 20 or more four times
