IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is set to co-host the Vanharte Orange County Collegiate Classic, Feb. 12-13. The two-day tournament will be held at Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, California, with the par-70 course being played at 6,645 yards. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, while the final round will be contested on Tuesday. Both days are slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
This is the fifth year UCI and Cal State Fullerton are co-hosting the Orange County Collegiate Classic, but it is the first time the tournament will be held at the Monarch Beach course.
The Anteaters welcome nine teams to Dana Point, including co-host Cal State Fullerton and fellow Big West members CSUN, UC Riverside and UC San Diego. Rounding out the field will be the University of British Columbia, California Baptist, Gonzaga, Sacramento State and St. John's.
UCI's 5-count-4 lineup is comprised of Darien Zhao, Jin Nakao, Jason Tang, Yaoting Zou and Rei Harashima. Joshua Lane and Kevin McGough will also be competing as individuals.
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine opened the spring season with an 11th-place finish at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Feb. 6-8. Jin Nakao led the Anteaters in a tie for 41st with a 54-hole score of 221 (70-75-76). Darien Zhao bounced back from a tough first round to tie for 56th at 223 (80-73-70). Rei Harashima (73-73-78) and Yaoting Zou (76-75-73) also tied for 60th, while Jason Tang (226) tied for 69th.
BACK TO WORK
Three Anteaters enter the Orange County Collegiate Classic with sub-73 season averages. Senior Darien Zhao leads the way at 71.80, while sophomore Jin Nakao sits at 72.11 through nine rounds. Freshman Jason Tang is third at 72.40. Sophomore Yaoting Zou is also just above the benchmark at 73.13. Zhao, Nakao, Tang and Zou all have at least one round in the 60s and combined for 10 sub-70 scores in the fall.
BREAKING RECORDS
Darien Zhao, UCI's only senior, kicked off the 2023-24 season with a bang as he claimed runner-up honors with a career-best 13-under 200 at the Nick Watney Invitational in September. Zhao opened the tournament with back-to-back sub-70 rounds, carding a 66 (-5) prior to firing a school-record 62 (-9). He finished the first two rounds with 14 birdies and one eagle against only two bogeys for a program-best 36-hole score of 128 (-14). Zhao, a two-time All-Big West selection, has eight career top-10 finishes.
WELCOME TO THE SHOW
Freshman Jason Tang made a statement in his collegiate debut, tying for sixth at the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational. Tang concluded his first tournament as an Anteater at 10-under 203 (74-65-64). He found his stride with a bogey-free second round to jump 40 spots in the standings, and carried the momentum into the final round where he continued his ascent up the leaderboard with a 64 (-7).
