TEMPE, Ariz. - UC Irvine's
Sohrob Amiryavari advanced out of qualifying singles on the first day of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships Thursday at Kiwanis Tennis Center.

Amiryavari earned two straight-set wins against Big West opponents. He started the day with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Andy Hernandez of Hawai'i, then took down UC Riverside's Hugo Degrande, 6-2, 6-4, to join six of his teammates in Friday's main draw.

Mason Bui and
Max Fardanesh both went 1-1 in qualifying singles. Bui cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Caden Bell of UCR, before falling to Pelayo Rodriguez (UC San Diego). Fardanesh also got out to a strong start, upending Cal Poly's Jack McGary, 7-6 (2), 6-3. He then came up short against Arizona State's Roi Ginat.

The Anteaters are back in action Friday starting with doubles at 9 a.m. and main draw singles at 10 a.m.
