IRVINE, Calif. -Β The UC Irvine women's indoor track & field team is back in action this weekend at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque. The one-day meet will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday, Jan. 20, starting at 8 a.m. (MST) / 7 a.m. (PST).

STORYLINES
β’ Twenty-five Anteaters are entered in 13 events on Saturday.
β’ Seventeen of those student-athletes competed last weekend while eight are set to make their season debut.
β’ Reyna Johnson was named the MPSF Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 16.
β’ Johnson was recognized after breaking the indoor school record in the long jump with a PR 5.89m (19-4).
β’ Sixteen current 'Eaters rank among the top-10 in program history in 14 individual events.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK STATUS
Junior Reyna Johnson was named the MPSF Women's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 16. She was recognized for her performance at the season-opening Spokane Indoor Challenge where she won the long jump with a school-record 5.89 meters (19-4). Johnson was sitting in second place when she hit the record-breaking mark on her sixth and final attempt to take over the top spot. She joined teammate Jolie Robinson (19-2) as the only two Anteaters to surpass 19 feet in the long jump in indoor history. Johnson also competed in the 60m hurdles where she finished third overall. The Sacramento native clocked a personal-best 8.66, which is fifth among UCI's all-time leaders.

BIG TIME DEBUT
Freshman Kailah McKenzie had quite the collegiate debut as she cracked UC Irvine's top-10 in all three of her events at the Spokane Indoor Challenge. McKenzie was the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 5.74m (18-10), which ranks third in program history. She added a third-place showing in the high jump where she cleared 1.66m (5-5.25), putting her at No. 6 among the Anteater leaders. The Moreno Valley, California, native also took fourth in the race and tied for eighth in school history with a time of 8.77 seconds in the 60m hurdles.

TYLER DEFENDS TITLE
Senior Deandra Tyler defended her shot put title at the Spokane Indoor Challenge, winning the event with a toss of 14.87m (48-9.5). Sophomore Nyla Baker made it a 1-2 finish for the Anteaters as she claimed runner-up honors with a personal-record 13.68m (44-10.75). That mark ranks fifth in indoor program history. In the weight throw, Tyler was fifth at 15.51m (50-10.75), while sophomore DeAna Davis registered a PR 14.81m (48-7.25) to place seventh.

MOVIN' ON UP
Senior Mia Marquez established a personal-record 57.68 in the 400m at the season-opening Spokane Indoor Challenge. Her time moved her up two spots into a tie for eighth among the Anteaters' all-time indoor leaders.

GOING THE DISTANCE
Junior Sameen Andar broke two school records at the 2023 MPSF Championships. Andar was the runner-up in the 3000m (9:39.12) and took third in the 5000m (16:37.63) at last year's conference meet. She opened the 2024 campaign with a second-place showing in the 3000m (9:46.60) at the Spokane Indoor Challenge. A pair of Anteaters also placed among the top-five in the mile with junior Malia Gay crossing the finish line in 5:08.88 to come in third and freshman Kaia Schmidt taking fifth at 5:12.39.

UC Irvine will make the second of its three trips to The Podium in Spokane, Washington, for the Riverfront Invitational and Multis, Feb. 1-3.
