·Â
Emilie Castagna highlights the Anteaters this week as she picked up her first Big West award, Big West Offensive Player of the Week. The sophomore was Big West All-Freshman Team in 2022, and is UCI's second award winner this year after a goal and assist in Thursday's 2-2 draw.
·Â
Marissa LeVine recorded her first career point Thursday assisting on UCI's first goal. The fourth-year biomedical engineering and pre-med major earned it in her 21st career match
·Â
Gianna Creighton's reached 70th career matches making her the 16th 'Eater to reach the mark, and she's entered UCI's top 10 at 73 now. She's still on pace to reach 7,000 career minutes at 6,509 this week having played all but three minutes in 2023
· Creighton was joined by
Glo Hinojosa,
Kiera Smeenge, and last match
Lilli Rask to compile 50+ career matches. In UCI history, 97 'Eaters have reached 50 with
Desiree Mendoza one match away and six others on pace to reach 50 by the end of the regular season
· The Anteaters begin Big West play with a pair of draws much like the 2022 squad that drew in its first three Big West matches at UCSD, at UCD, and vs. CSUB before their run into the NCAA Tournament
Jenika Davis: CalHOPE Courage Award
· Anteater sophomore
Jenika Davis was honored September 21st with that month's CalHOPE Courage Award. The award recognizes two student-athletes at California colleges and universities monthly for overcoming the stress, anxiety, and mental trauma associated with personal hardships and adversity.
· Davis joined the program in 2022 and played five matches earning an assist. The forward was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia midway through the year and began treatment teaming with Be The Match who helped her find a donor and undergo a transplant in March 2023. Davis is redshirting in 2023, but still around the team and has begun working out and running with hopes to return to full health and get back on the pitch again.
Sunday vs. the Rainbow Wahine
· Hawai'i has their sights set on postseason and beyond so far 2-3-3 with four points through three Big West matches. They won at home vs. CSUN before drawing at Fullerton and losing at UC Riverside Sunday. They will host UCSD Thursday before the 'Eaters. All-time, UCI holds the 10-2-1 edge including 5-1 at Hawai'i, and last year won 4-1 in a battle of the final tourney spot.
· The Rainbow Wahine's numbers are a little skewed due to a matchup vs. Gonzaga where they lost, 7-5. Regardless, Amber Gilbert (4 G), Mia Foster (3 G), and Brynn Mitchell (2 G) bring the offense with defense on lock from Sophie Augustin (13 GA, 35 SV), Zoe Park, and Jicha Jacey
